The Sensualist

I love this room. It's probably one of my favorite spaces we've shown all year. Kay is not one for tchotchkes or accessories, and I'm always spellbound by how she achieves so much with so few things. That's an art. Filled with classic pieces (the table, dining table chairs and upholstered pieces), this room looks so modern and fresh to me. And a basket as a chandelier - I mean, how fabulous is that? We've shown a few laundry rooms in the magazine this year - they have really come into their own as beautiful spaces and this one is no exception. I think it's because the washer and dryer were truly the two last appliances in the house to get a sexy makeover, and now we're seeing more of them. I've seen a few laundry rooms that you could live in. This one has great storage - and it's good looking, too. I really like the his-and-hers vanities in the master suite. The built-in shelves keep everything at reach - and the galvanized tins (like the one on the top shelf) keep unsightlies, well, out of sight. Notice the dark grout in between the subway tiles. Nice touch for those who do not like to scrub. And the pavers - they are concrete! Objets d'art, like the barn doors-turned-headboard, are Kay's specialty. She's a pro at turning the ordinary (like barn doors!) into something unique. This room is very Zen-like, both in the photographs and in real life. The copper-lined fixture is new and I love how it adds a unique patina to the room. It really ties the whole space together - from the pecky-cypress ceiling and the orange coverlet to the similarly colored palette in the art.
