Geometric Grace

In this 2017 Bath of the Year award winning space, Design Galleria’s Kelly Carlisle focuses on high-impact details

Kelly Carlisle had an instant connection with her client, Sherri Herrick, starting with their similar funky personal style. Once she set foot in Herrick’s Sandy Springs home, she was enthralled by the iron windows in the kitchen.

“I’ve always been obsessed with those windows,” says Carlisle, a designer with Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath. In the bath, she created a bold plan that added iron windows, among other unconventional details, including a marble and porcelain geometric floor. The idea was “traditional materials with a modern twist,” she says.

The bathroom’s redesign removed a wall to incorporate a larger shower with steam capabilities and situated a tub as a peninsula between the weathered antique oak vanities. “We made it significantly larger than the original footprint,” she says. The massive iron window creates the appearance of more space, especially with the addition of vanity mirrors suspended from the ceiling.

But the flooring presented a challenge for Carlisle. She had based her design, which featured marble countertops with a waterfall edge, around an existing pattern she had seen, but that flooring wasn’t waterproof. She was determined not to disappoint her client. “I promised it,” Carlisle says. “You want each client to get something unique.”

Working with Charlene Rowe at Renaissance Tile & Bath and Walker Zanger, Carlisle created a water-jet floor in a similar design featuring layers of black marble and porcelain that mimics wood, set around a modified marble quatrefoil. The floors complement design choices such as polished-nickel fixtures and hardware from the Matthew Quinn Collection.

Carlisle enjoys playing with proportions, as she did with the paneled Calacatta Caldia marble shower walls.  “You’ve got to make a statement,” she says.
