This Oceanside Hotel is a Pink-Lover’s Paradise
After a charming refresh, the family-owned Cobblers Cove in Barbados is a design-lovers ultimate island getaway
I sit on the veranda at breakfast, breathing in the salty air and watching the vibrant blue sea break just below. In front of me, a spread of beverages—ice-cold water, fresh-pressed watermelon juice, coffee served in Royal Crown Derby china designed by the hotel’s creative director—fuels a day of ultimate relaxation at the luxurious Cobblers Cove on the Barbadian coast.
Visitors know it for its playful pink palette and charming coastal cues, but after a recent renovation led by owners Hugh and Sam Godsal—whose family has owned the property for nearly 60 years—the 40-suite boutique hotel is back in the spotlight and better than ever.
Once a private residence, the Godsal family has spent years elevating the lush property, and today, no two suites are alike. Colleton at the Great House has a private terrace and plunge pool, while the Mile & A Quarter suite pairs vaulted ceilings with a classic four-poster bed. Throughout, rooms are dressed in Soane Britain fabrics and bathrooms are adorned with colorful, Caribbean-inspired tiles, designed by Sam in collaboration with Bert & May. Design-lovers will rejoice in scallop trims, rattan and raffia accessories, whimsical wallcoverings, and terrazzo touches that reward a closer look.
From the moment you wake, adventure awaits for all types of vacationers, from complimentary boat rides to tennis lessons, dance classes, spa sessions at the Sea Moon Salon, and motorized water sports. Lucky swimmers may spot sea turtles gliding through the water, and reefs off the hotel’s beach are home to hundreds of fish for curious snorkelers.
Back on land, a garden tour with Kennedy is a must. Even the least green-thumbed guest will enjoy the leisurely walk through the grounds, where the head gardener shares stories about the fragrant Lady of the Night flower and sky-high traveler’s palm. Following, afternoons are best spent lounging by the kidney-shaped pool, lined with vibrant green and blue mosaics and just steps from the refreshed Stanley’s bar. Small surprises such as cold towels or citrus sorbet appear from staff just as you start to feel the heat.
At 4 p.m., afternoon tea held daily in the Drawing Room, complete with finger sandwiches and other accompaniments, is the perfect holdover to dinner at Camelot, known for island-fresh dishes and rich, organic flavors. The restaurant serves every meal, though Sunday lunch is a guest favorite with a hotel-wide barbecue of expertly grilled fare.
Off-property, the island bustles with activity. Stroll the enchanting grounds of Hunte’s Gardens, where hundreds of plant species greet you around every winding corner, or visit Ireka at the Ngozi Farm and Cultural Sanctuary, whose handwoven decorative items like lampshades, baskets, and mirrors can be spotted throughout Cobblers Cove.
For a drink with a view, Local & Co. allows guests to sip cocktails both on the patio or straight in the sand. A few steps away, music nights on Little Bristol Beach Bar’s open-air patio have all walks of life dancing and singing along. Closer to home, Cobblers Cove hosts its own evening entertainment with talented musicians who keep the atmosphere alive.
On my final night, guests, owners, and staff come together for one last carefree dance as Celine Dion’s “I’m Alive” fills Stanley’s bar, each of us singing along with smiles wide. And as the evening winds down, the sweet scent of the Lady of the Night flower drifts through the air, guiding me back to my suite where I will dream of one day returning to this charming Caribbean retreat. cobblerscove.com
