A Couple’s California Dream Comes to Life Thanks To a Midcentury Remodel
Atelier Davis turns a fragmented bathroom into an open, spa-like sanctuary
Moving from the Bay Area to Atlanta, a couple embarked on a search to find a home with a familiar California feel. After discovering a charming midcentury ranch-style abode, the homeowners recruited designer Jessica Davis of Atelier Davis to transform key areas—including a not-so-typical primary bathroom.
“The primary bath was fairly spacious, but it was chopped up into all these confusing little spaces,” says Davis. “There was a vanity room, a room with a toilet, and then another room with a shower and a tub.” Maximizing the natural light and creating a more breathable layout required Davis to get creative. Apart from keeping the toilet room in its original spot, everything else was opened up, and a wet room—complete with three showerheads and a freestanding tub—was created. The designer incorporated a reeded glass wall framed in black metal to preserve privacy between the wet room and vanities. Custom floating mirrors bordered in the same metal enforce cohesion. “The wife is really short and the husband is really tall,” says Davis. “We had to consider that with the vanity height and height of the mirrors to make sure it would work for both of them.”
Lacking any obvious spots for storage or even towel holders on the wall, Davis added ample cabinetry and towel hooks on the side of the vanity leading into the wet room. “It was a balance to make the space feel serene and spa-like while also making sure that it worked functionally with plenty of storage because it would really be a workhorse bathroom,” says Davis.
Color plays a key role in adding warmth and personality. Dusty pink tile throughout and swirling marble countertops set a soothing scene, while a statement terracotta tub is just the pop of color needed. “The tub is concrete so it was an absolute bear to get into the space, but it feels natural to the room and the color reminds me of Georgia clay,” adds Davis. Thanks to the property’s remote lot, a soak in the tub calls to the forest beyond, allowing one to slip into a state of deep relaxation with ease.
