A Welsh-Inspired Manor Rises on a Serene Ravine Property in Roswell
This 11,000-square-foot Roswell home by Alison Baker Design and Bradley E. Heppner Architecture blends English charm, reclaimed materials, and thoughtful design
With its undulating wooded topography that includes a water-filled ravine, it’s no wonder the owners of this Roswell property were immediately drawn to the idyllic 5-acre site. “The clients didn’t come to me with a specific program, so our focus was doing right by the land,” explains architect Brad Heppner of the collaboration with interior designer Alison Baker and construction firm Garrett & Ingols. “We did our best to find the most sensitive place to build the house. It’s far enough back from the road to preserve privacy and close enough to the ravine to enjoy the view.”
While the homeowners gravitate toward the English Arts and Crafts style and country manors, the new 11,000-square-foot structure’s aesthetic wasn’t fully cemented until Heppner secured a stockpile of reclaimed bricks with the perfect patina. “Finding these bricks quickly established the character and feel for the house and led to the Welsh-influenced architecture,” says Heppner, who paired the bricks—which still have traces of green and blue paint—with slate and copper roofing and limestone terraces. “We chose low-maintenance materials that will age beautifully.”
The timeless materials palette extends to the interior, which features custom oak paneling and cabinetry, reclaimed ceiling beams and flooring, and slate and steel accents. To help carry out the English aesthetic, the couple called on Baker, with whom they had collaborated on other residences.
“It was my job to work hand in hand with Brad to match his vision,” says Baker, who designed a custom banquette for the dining area with an arm detail that mimics an archway Heppner devised.
Classically-inspired case goods that could easily be confused for antiques lend to the home’s historical feel, while streamlined upholstery in textured performance fabrics alludes to the owners’ desire for laid-back spaces to relax with their children and grandchildren.
Because the family favors blue, green, and natural tones, Baker created a soothing mix of the palette and infused the hues throughout, from the serene first-floor primary bedroom to the sophisticated living room and adjacent oak-paneled sitting room—a space the homeowners utilize daily. “You feel like you’re in your own little cocoon there,” notes the designer, who strove to incorporate items that would hold meaning for the couple. “We commissioned a few paintings from artist Jane Ingols, including the heron paintings and a landscape inspired by their property in the living room.”
The finished product is elegantly understated and perfectly unique. “The goal was to create something that’s comfortable rather than formal or stuffy. The house has a rather grand exterior, but it doesn’t feel that way inside. It’s simply warm and inviting.”
