A Zen Bathroom Surrounded by Nature is a Masterclass in Restraint
Habachy Designs takes a mindful approach to a spa-like primary bath encased in windows overlooking woods
From the first look at the floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides of the primary bathroom, Michael Habachy of Habachy Designs was instantly drawn to the space’s dramatic, site-specific architecture by Staffan Svenson. “It immediately presented an opportunity to design a space where light, nature, and architecture could work together in a very intentional way,” says Habachy.
At the same time, the transparency of the glass walls presented a compelling challenge: how to create a bathroom that feels both open and serene like a spa, while still maintaining a sense of privacy and functionality.
To accomplish this, Habachy envisioned the room along a nearly symmetrical axis, anchored by a sculptural freestanding tub and with the natural world outside serving as art. “This layout provides a natural focal point, and frames the landscape as a constantly changing backdrop throughout the seasons,” he adds.
To minimize any interruption to the view or daylight, dual vanities appear to hover in the air, with mirrors custom-fabricated in slender steel frames and suspended from narrow tile-wrapped columns. “What makes this detail particularly meaningful is the way the stone wraps continuously around the cabinetry, folding down the sides and extending underneath,” says Habachy.
Exercising masterful restraint, all of his choices were equally considered and calibrated for aesthetics and practicality from every vantage point. That extends from the lighting—cleverly hidden in plain sight thanks to narrow troughs integrated into the ceiling that conceal both waterproof LED lighting and motorized shades—and down to the reflective stone surfaces and even the discreet digital controls in the shower, which allow the homeowners to store personalized settings such as preferred temperature and steam levels.
“Every decision was made to support a sense of stillness, clarity, and effortless luxury,” explains Habachy. “The result is a space that feels effortless, but is in fact meticulously planned to achieve beauty, harmony, and purpose.”
