In Conversation with Alexandra Flint
Raised by a design great, stylist and design creative Alexandra Flint carves her own path
Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles: A woman of many talents, there’s not much you can’t do between styling, art direction, and more, but there might be something you like best. What aspect of Alexandra Morris Creative Co. do you enjoy the most?
Alexandra Flint: What I love most is that no two days are ever the same. I have the privilege of collaborating with incredibly talented people—from the team at Suzanne Kasler’s studio to top photographers, designers, and the inspiring editorial team at Frederic. The constant diversity of work keeps me energized and allows me to grow and evolve creatively in ways I never imagined.
AH&L: How would you describe your personal design style?
AF: Refined, layered, and approachable with a fresh, editorial sensibility.
AH&L: You are a sharp stylist with incredible taste. Are there any key pieces of advice you can give to those trying to hone their skills?
AF: Study beautiful interiors whenever you can. There are so many incredible coffee table books showcasing expertly styled spaces—not to mention the endless inspiration available on Instagram and Pinterest. Train your eye by examining what makes the styling work: why certain table accessories feel cohesive, how a bookshelf achieves the perfect sense of balance, or the way a floral arrangement effortlessly complements a room. You’d be amazed how much you can learn simply by studying interior photos that are styled well. For those looking to pursue styling more seriously, my best advice is to get yourself on the set of an interiors shoot. Assist in any capacity you can—whether with a designer, photographer, or stylist. There is truly no substitute for being on set and experiencing firsthand the incredible attention to detail, time, and effort that goes into creating beautiful photography.
AH&L: We have a copy of your new—and first—book, Everybody Loves Stripes, proudly displayed at the AH&L office! Tell us about what this release has meant to you.
AF: Co-producing Everybody Loves Stripes will be one of the extraordinary opportunities of my career. I pitched the idea to Schumacher a few years ago and have endless gratitude to the Schumacher and Monacelli teams for believing in the book concept. Most of all, it was the greatest joy to collaborate with my incredibly talented co-author Emma Bazilian, our brilliant designer Steph Diaz, and the ever-inspiring Dara Caponigro. The book is a comprehensive tome surveying the best striped interiors from around the world—equal parts fun and inspiring. I am very proud how it came together, and the response has been incredible—affirming that everybody does love stripes!
AH&L: Any plans for more books in the future?
AF: Yes! I am collaborating with Schumacher and Monacelli on a new book. While I can’t share much yet, it will be a different focus and I am excited how it is starting to take shape.
AH&L: Your mother is featured as a Legend of Design. What was it like growing up with such a namesake as Suzanne Kasler and how did it inspire you to embark on your own journey in the design industry?
AF: I am the luckiest to have the most inspiring mom in the world. I was immersed in the world of design from the very beginning. I remember my first trip to the Paris Flea Market at just 10 years old! I had never been anywhere like it; the history and beauty. And yet, in all candor, a career in design wasn’t something I initially envisioned for myself. It wasn’t until college, during summers spent in New York, that it found me naturally and everything began to click. My mom’s passion, natural talent, and extraordinary success have been an inspiration for me. Watching her has encouraged me to discover my own place in this industry and fully embrace it. We always have the best time together, and the fact that we now get to share in the world of design is the cherry on top.
AH&L: At such a young age, you have worked with many incredible names in the industry and accomplished so much. What does the Atlanta design community mean to you?
AF: I grew up in Atlanta, and the design community here is vibrant and inspiring. We have the top interior design resources, antiques shops, and vendors here. Not to mention, fabulous design talent. With this kind of network, it’s hard not to influence one’s style and design sensibility. It certainly did mine. Atlanta has always been a great place to grow as a creative, and I am proud to be a part of this community.
AH&L: Your future is bright. Is there anything you have your sights set on or are waiting to sink your teeth into?
AF: On a rather personal note, I am expecting my third baby this spring, so in the most immediate sense, I am looking forward to being with my family and focusing on them now and at the start of the summer. alexandramorris.co
A Day in the Life
Morning to Night with Alexandra Flint
7 A.M. The morning begins the best way: Our toddler boys tumble into our bedroom to hang out and play. My husband and I get ready for the day while tag-teaming the morning routine.
8:30 A.M. I take my oldest to preschool. Right now, his favorite music to listen to on the drive is The Beach Boys.
9:30 A.M. Head to the Suzanne Kasler Interiors studio to sit down with Suzanne and our marketing manager. We go through a round of approvals and map out the spring photoshoot calendar, the kind of planning session that makes the months ahead suddenly feel real.
11:30 A.M. A design friend is in town from New York. We grab lunch at Le Bon Nosh. A great catch-up—I always feel inspired after seeing her!
1:30 P.M. A check-in with a designer I’m styling a shoot for in Connecticut next month. We review the scouting shots and take stock—what’s working, what’s missing, and which accessories and artwork still need to be sourced.
3 P.M. Hop on a virtual meeting with my co-author and art director for my upcoming book with Schumacher. New images are considered, chapter edits are made, and I’m excited to see it is starting to come together.
5:30 P.M. Work gives way to the evening shift! My three-year-old and 15-month-old have
a dance party in the kitchen while I get dinner started.
