This Buckhead Home Shows How New Construction Can Still Feel Like Cherished Heritage

Reu Architects, Nancy Izlar Interiors, and Revival Construction reimagine new construction with heirloom-inspired details, layered craftsmanship, and spaces tailored for family life

The home’s architectural massing was key; it steps down from a prominent two-story gable to smaller-scale elements, preventing the nearly 7,000-square-foot structure from overwhelming the street.

n the kitchen, cabinetry built by Kingdom Woodworks was designed by Reu Architects to hide all kitchen equipment and other small appliances. Above the center island are custom hanging shades made by Edgar-Reeves with a Chelsea fabric and a GSD trim.

The Lee Jofa pheasant wallpaper in the powder bath was one of the first items chosen by the homeowner, and is finished with a 19th-century Irish ebonized gilt mirror from Travis & Company.

The boy’s room, dressed in a Sanderson fabric, had a tiny design helper with the son picking his own fabric. “He wanted those ducks and he never once wavered,” says Izlar.

The client wanted timeless bedrooms for her children that could grow with them as they matured, so Izlar selected a darling floral Ferrick Mason wallpaper and fabrics for the daughter’s room.

“Everything was to be completely timeless. The only thing we did that was just for fun was the yellow leather banquette downstairs in the pool bar. That was our little splash,” says Izlar.

The pool bar opens to a covered porch, pool, and yard beyond, so it’s all one large entertaining space for the kids and their friends, as well as the clients and theirs.

No detail was overlooked in the wine cellar, where iron-framed glass doors, sumptuous marble, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling clad in warm ochre tile combine to create a space as beautiful as the collection it houses.

By opting for mature plantings, Land Plus created the impression of a home that has been settled in its surroundings for far longer than it has.

Caroline Rolader with Reu Architects knew the traditional brick ranch in Buckhead well; she had previously worked with its former owners on renovation plans. When new clients purchased it and approached her about creating their forever home, one that would accommodate their family of four, three energetic dogs, and regularly visiting grandparents while fitting seamlessly into the neighborhood, she saw an opportunity to reimagine the space entirely.

A collaborative decision was made to maintain the original footprint but pursue a complete rebuild to achieve the architectural integrity and livability the clients desired. With Revival Construction and Rolader addressing the structure, interior designer Nancy Izlar joined the team to layer in the classic details and custom touches that would bring the vision to life.

Izlar’s role was translating the clients’ appreciation for tradition into thoughtful, sophisticated spaces. “The husband particularly pays attention to building details,” she explains. “He grew up in a family that loves antiques and beautiful things, and he wanted to carry that on.”

Izlar, alongside Rolader, designed the reverse vaulted plaster ceiling in the dining room, specified custom millwork profiles throughout, and ensured that every element embedded enduring craftsmanship into the new construction. The result includes wide plank floors, substantial ceiling beams, and refined trim work that feel authentic to a bygone era.

The collaborative vision between architect and designer centered on creating spaces that would transcend trends. This restraint guided every selection, from the Gracie wallpaper anchoring the formal dining room to the stone fireplace in the family room and the carefully composed kitchen with its plaster hood and marble backsplash. Perhaps most telling is the custom 32-foot runner in the main gallery, which Izlar designed by pulling colors from throughout the home. “It’s very important to me that the homes I create are seamless,” she says. “I want you to walk through and say, ‘Wow, this is so calming and beautiful.’”

Functionality was as crucial as aesthetics, and an open kitchen and family room accommodate daily life with young children. A scullery with brick floors doubles as a dog-washing station for the family’s three pets, complete with a sink-level water bowl filler. The “moffice” (mudroom office) features a Dutch door that allows supervision of outdoor play while the dogs are safely inside. Upstairs, the charming children’s bedrooms will grow with them. The lower level provides a self-contained guest suite, wine cellar, media room, and bar that extends to the covered terrace overlooking the manicured yard and pool. It’s a home rooted in tradition, designed for today, and built for a lifetime—a forever house in every sense of the word.
