A Family-Friendly Brookhaven Home Blends Traditional Style With Laid-back Living

Designer Beth Ervin layers comfort and character in this Brookhaven residence previously renovated by architect Linda MacArthur and builder Michael Ladisic

The best homes reflect who we are and how we live. For designer Beth Ervin’s longtime clients, this was the case when they decided to downsize from their larger, more formal home to one that required less upkeep and better suited their daily lives. With children and grandchildren nearby, they felt ready for a more laid-back, low-maintenance space centered around family.

“They wanted a home in Atlanta that was cozy and turnkey, where they could walk out the door and not have to worry about an abundance of upkeep,” says Ervin. After nearly two decades of collaboration on residences in the city, the mountains, and the coast, she was well attuned to delivering on their priorities and tastes.

They found their perfect setting in a Brookhaven residence that had been previously renovated by architect Linda MacArthur and builder Michael Ladisic for Huff Harrington co-founder Meg Harrington. “It had all the right ingredients,” says Ervin, who allowed the home’s existing architecture—which includes antique wood beams, sloped ceilings, and comfortable proportions—to set the tone for layers of warmth and coziness.

The most significant change took place in the kitchen, where Ervin updated cabinetry, added new countertops, installed glazed Italian tile, and expanded the window over the sink to bring in more natural light. Elsewhere, Ervin layered wallpaper, textiles, rugs, and antiques to suit her clients’ love for color and character. Many of the antiques were carried over from the homeowners’ previous residence Ervin had designed, creating a collected feel.

The dining room is a standout moment, where a pair of antique pink-and-white lamps inspired the selection of a showstopping floral wallpaper. “She likes beautiful, unique, timeless pieces,” says Ervin. “They are the personality that creates a room.”

With family-friendly livability in mind, each room was designed to serve a purpose. “They wanted to use every room in the house,” explains Ervin. This led to practical shifts that maximize both form and function, including a playroom designed for grandchildren and the transformation of a downstairs bedroom into a cozy den, where a lively botanical wallcovering makes a statement.

The result is a home that feels deeply personal. “My working relationship with them has been more than just a client relationship; they are true friends,” says Ervin. “As a designer, success is being able to complete a project and put a period at the end of the sentence when you know you’ve made your clients happy.”
