This Serene Trilith New Build Proves Great Design Is a Team Effort

A trusted collaboration between architect Rodolfo Castro, Anna Booth Interiors, David Lewis & Co., and landscape architect Lucinda Bray resulted in a light-filled retreat defined by privacy, gardens, and enduring character

What began as an ordinary day for residential designer Rodolfo Castro turned into a project he will not soon forget. While working on a separate home in the scenic south-of-Atlanta Trilith community, Castro was unexpectedly pulled into a meeting with soon-to-be clients. “I wasn’t really prepared to have an interview or anything that day,” he says. “I introduced myself, we talked a little bit about what they wanted to do here, and I ended up on the project.”

Recommended by the builder David Lewis, a star-studded design team quickly formed to include interior designer Anna Booth and landscape architect Lucinda Bray of Floralis. “We’ve all worked together multiple times before, so we have a great rapport with one another and enjoy working together,” says Booth. “It’s a constant trust.” And it’s that camaraderie and confidence in each other’s ability that allowed the 10,130-square-foot home to come together seamlessly.

Nestled on a lot that backs up to the nearby nature preserve, a sense of escapism was the homeowners’ main priority. A spacious arrival courtyard keeps the front entry hidden from the street while also allowing for an abundance of natural light to stream in. Upon entering, the foyer’s sculptural staircase draws the eye without distraction, its soft curves and plaster detailing an architectural masterpiece of its own. “You’ll notice that the foyer doesn’t have a lot of stuff and that’s on purpose,” says Castro. “The staircase speaks for itself and sets the tone for the house.”

In the main living area, high ceilings and neutral tones open up the interiors while promoting serenity. Ceiling beams add a layer of texture to the furniture’s classic French silhouettes, and the dining room’s crystal chandelier glimmers when the sun hits just right through the floor-to-ceiling steel windows. “The homeowners desired an element of restraint within the home,” says Booth. “The architectural finishes were intentionally designed to be simple and provide a clean backdrop for antiques and art.”

To infuse soul into the new build, Booth sprinkled antiques throughout including a 17th-century fountain in the backyard and a set of French mirrors—Booth notes the difficulty and joy of finding a matching pair when antiques hunting—in the primary bath. In the primary bedroom, an 18th-century Swedish linen press will age gracefully with the home. “When a home is new, you don’t want to fill it with only new things because it will feel like it was done overnight,” says Booth. “It was important to select furnishings that had patina and felt storied.”

The kitchen, a collaboration with Kingdom Woodworks, is equal parts beauty and durability. A plaster hood softens the space and echoes architectural details, while the marble backsplash and countertops layer in movement and dimension. To encourage a connection to the outdoors, kitchen windows tilt open over the garden below.

The outdoor spaces are prime for entertaining and enjoyment complete with a pool, sports court, covered porch, and garden. Even the primary bathroom opens up to a serene, micro courtyard, making soaks in the tub extra luxurious and breezy. “Although it’s a new house, it feels established because of Lucinda’s landscaping,” says Booth, who emphasizes the group effort this home took.

And when looking back on what made this project successful, the team agrees it’s the people who make all the difference. “I’m grateful that I had the chance to work on this home with this high-caliber team,” says Castro. “Who knew that an unscheduled afternoon meeting would turn into one of the best projects I’ve ever done in my life.”
