These 17 Winning Projects from The Philip Trammell Shutze Awards are a Lesson in Classical, Elegant Design

Coined the “city in the forest” and replete with historic houses and sprawling green spaces, Atlanta is home to many renowned architects, designers, and creatives. And for one night a year, the city’s top industry professionals gather to recognize the region’s best and brightest at the most anticipated awards ceremony of the season, the Philip T. Shutze Awards.

Named after famed Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze, the prestigious award honors the talented architects, designers, landscape architects, and other design experts who are committed to preserving and upholding classical design. With a highly competitive submission process, the winners were anonymously selected by this year’s jurors interior designer Courtney Coleman, landscape architect Melissa Reavis, and architect Tim Barber.

Following deliberation, the elegant soirée was held at the Piedmont Driving Club in October with nearly 300 industry professionals dressed in black-tie and gathered to celebrate the multi-talented winners. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles was in attendance and is delighted to share the award-winning projects with you.

Architecture – Residential | Renovation over 5,000 sf

Isle of Hope Residence, Isle of Hope, Georgia

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “A polished reinvention of an 1860s plains house in the language of a plantation house. The new plan keeps the original front parlors while arranging more open family areas and embracing a large screened porch. The rear structures bring symmetry to pragmatic functionality. Inside, a splendid new staircase and Greek and Revival details all elevate the formal spaces and significant rooms. The kitchen and service areas are restrained and modest, yet the cheeky bar is paneled like Mt. Vernon.
The site design demonstrates that a long and narrow lot
can live large.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work for a family with young children who had a great vision for a generational Southern home in a charming island enclave.”

Architecture – Residential Renovation 2,500–5,000 sf

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This subtle Italianate renovation pares down the classical front facade and conceals a two-story expansion to the rear with a conservatory-style dining room, light-filled primary bedroom, and new elevator. Highly symmetric with calculated scale and proportion, the design bends rules with poetic invention.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This modestly sized, villa-like home was a pleasure to renovate; it accomplishes the pairing of both the serene, quiet moments of its surroundings with a home that has opportunity for great gatherings. Throughout the symmetrically designed home, architectural antique elements provide sophistication, warmth, and personality.”

Architecture – Residential Renovation under 2,500 sf

French Pavilion, Atlanta, Georgia

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “An artful reimagining of an iconic 1980s structure, this design subtly adds significant square footage to a compact footprint. The renovation reinforces symmetry, rhythm, and scale in the plan and very flat relief-work in the elevations. The restrained elegance of the interior details and the circular geometry is extended into landscape elements.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “We had an amazing team and delightful clients that made this home a pleasure to design. It was a challenging and highly visible lot. Our job was to work within the same footprint, but make it the best possible version of itself, enhancing the French Pavilion style of the original home.”

Interior Design – Residential under 4,000 sf

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “The designer took what could have been a difficult assignment of fitting the client’s collection of extraordinary antiques and art into a contemporary condominium setting—managing the task with such panache that the results could not be more chic or elegant. The relatively spare setting of the furniture highlights its beautiful shapes, while elements like dramatic scenic wallpaper panels, surprising red-lacquered library, and bold upholstery fabrics give the home a contemporary and livable character.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Sometimes you work on a project where everything is too good to be true. This project was not work, it was pure joy. And to win the Shutze Award is just icing on the cake. I am honored and overwhelmed.”

Interior Design – Residential over 8,000 sf

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This house feels cinematic in its scope, complexity, and incredibly personal narrative. What seems like a dream project for a designer—travel the world collecting furnishings and inspiration—resulted in a home that feels utterly unique, yet very much of its place. The decor doesn’t just complement the strong architecture of the house, but it layers elements to create transporting spaces.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “As a native Southerner with an interest in classicism, earning this award is particularly rewarding. The legacy property of Rancho Sabino Grande demonstrates the pillars and ideals of the ICAA, and my team and I are very proud to accept this honor.”

Interior Design – Residential 4,000–8,000 sf

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This project is a master class in timeless design with its mix of furniture styles and proportions, artfully arranged to complement the strong existing architecture. When one realizes that it is a redesign incorporating existing furniture and art, it seems even more masterful. The consistent color palette unifies the rooms, with subtle changes in finish giving complexity and providing a glowing backdrop for sculptural antiques and contemporary furnishings.  Elements like beautifully constructed draperies and artful arrangements of precious objects and art are further evidence of the master’s hand.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This personal project is fulfilling as I was both the designer and client. I had total creative freedom. Designing my own home allows me to push the envelope and by establishing a foundation of tradition, I was able to take risks; I really used our house as a laboratory.”

Architecture – Residential under 4,000 sf

Historical Concepts

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This industrial-inspired house quietly innovates within hierarchy, symmetry, scale, and proportion. Using excellent craftsmanship, the design thoughtfully integrates the home into a waterfront site. A second-floor stair landing doubles as a library and gateway to the writer’s attic above. Inventive use of artificial lighting and paneled walls makes alchemy of the familiar.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “It is a true honor to not only be entrusted with designing the personal home of such an esteemed design colleague, but for our collaborative efforts to be recognized by this jury. A Trans-Atlantic Courtyard House, Atlanta, Georgia

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “A spare, starkly simple project with command of symmetry, scale, and proportion, yet no classical symbols make it undefinable. A graceful staircase, European limestone flooring and mantels, reclaimed beams, and thick walls with hand-worked plaster bring detailing into focus, revealing a seamless collaboration between the decorator and the architect. The house is frequently connected to the outdoors with loggia and covered-porch spaces where you are not fully exposed.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Our clients were inspired by a historic stone farm building in Europe, but sought a more simple interpretation. By exercising restraint in details and staying true to classical proportions, we created a home that seamlessly balances Old-World charm with fresh, elegant simplicity.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “Masterfully blending the classical and Art Deco influences of Cuba, this oceanfront family home solves the challenge of a side approach. Balconies, awnings, and operable shutters articulate a tropical language. Innovation abounds through rounded Deco corners, graceful curves everywhere, and a new limestone composite material cladding the conservatory.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Making an heirloom home and a comfortable family gathering place was a simple remit, but making it a showcase for our client’s revolving art collection while opening it to the Atlantic beachfront was the real challenge. The fun was finding the balance.”

 

Landscape/Garden Design – Residential Garden under one acre

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “An elegant project that masterfully negotiates a tough entry sequence with a sloping grade and asymmetrical approach. The landscape feels like a thoughtful extension of the building through the use of complementary materials and a proportional scale in the planting. The jury also appreciated the high level of craftsmanship displayed in the paving details of the front motor court. A wonderful example of classical design.”

Landscape/Garden Design – Residential Estate over one acre

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “A strikingly complex site plan that masterfully combines symmetry and rhythm. The attention to detail in the ironwork and hardscape show a true appreciation for craftmanship and a skilled understanding of scale and proportion. The plant palette, while minimal, shows a mastery of the region’s ecology and the entire landscape feels timeless and elegant.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This new four-story, mixed-use structure captures the spirit of early-20th century classical buildings found in downtown Atlanta. The resulting structure is now a source of neighborhood pride for a diverse population.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “Glenwood Park is an exemplar that shows traditional mixed-use neighborhoods can still be built today. It was a tremendous honor when Charles Brewer invited Historical Concepts to be a part of the design team that helped make this special place a reality.”

Architecture – Small Project under 1,500 sf

South of Broad Garden Folly, Charleston, South Carolina

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “The building sits comfortably within an existing garden and manages to bring program to a part of the landscape that was likely underutilized. This garden folly shows a masterful understanding of scale and proportion, and the jury appreciated the sense of whimsy with the tented ceiling.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “The folly exemplifies how traditional architecture remains relevant today. While the classical design honors its historic environs and precedent, 3-D modeling and CNC fabrication make use of contemporary construction methods. The result is grounded in history for modern living.”

Interior Design – Commercial

Private Sporting Club, Mauk, Georgia

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “What at first seems like a humble sporting lodge turns out to be a clever resort that is anything but typical. Careful attention was paid to details, which create a low-key and relaxed environment rooted in South Georgia.”

WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “This was a unique opportunity to work on a large-scale project for owners who had a grand vision. It was also a great collaboration with Historical Concepts, The Berndsen Co., and Hollander Design, who worked tirelessly to meet an expedited timeline and transform the existing property into a beautiful retreat.”

Artisan – Craftsmanship

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This project exhibits exceptionally skilled craftsmanship with its crispness of detail, beautifully rendered finishes, and expert execution of complicated details, such as curved pocket doors and overdoors. Details like unusual wood graining within paneling and finely wrought metalwork further show the abilities of this exemplary maker.”

Excellence in the Classical Tradition

Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Memphis, Tennessee

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This is a wonderful example of how a structure can be updated to current standards while celebrating the expressive design of classical tradition.”
