A New-Build Bathroom in Metro Atlanta is the Epitome of Luxury and Details

With a dream design team, a custom-built bathroom dares to venture into greatness

For Lori May, the ideal design process begins as a client is drawing plans with the architect. “For us, this was the best-case scenario,” she says of a three-year timeline in the Metro Atlanta new-build. “My team handles everything from plans and selections, down to the door knobs and cabinet hardware to the towels.”

That time allows May not only to really know her clients, but also the entire design team, which she says is crucial to success. Collaborating with an architect, builder, and cabinetmaker that her firm was already familiar with, May was able to take more risks while still maintaining her clients’ trust.

Those fortified relationships helped to execute May’s vision for a dark-stained wood wall. Through close communication with the cabinetmaker, they selected the same cabinet-grade rough-sawn oak with a linear grain to echo the custom vanities in the same bathroom. Beyond the tub are dual entries to the massive marble shower. Floating benches flank both ends, with linear drains tucked out of sight beneath each.

“They were very adventurous with us,” she says. “We stood in these spaces from the time we rendered them to when we were actually installing all of this,” says May. With her meticulous client, the designer also laid out the wall tiles, choosing each one. Before purchasing the free-floating “cupcake” bathtub (as they affectionately call it), her clients sat inside it, ensuring they loved the shape and two-person size.

The tub adds just the right bit of edge in the bathroom’s otherwise traditional look. “The whole house is a juxtaposition between modern and classic, which is what we do.”
