Graceful Grandeur
On a verdant property in Buckhead, the 2021 HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS SHOWHOUSE brims with classic design and simplistic elegance
Convivial Corner
Study, Carter Kay, Carter Kay Interiors
What might be designated as the formal living room in many houses because of its location next to the entry, this room was instead transformed by Carter Kay and Nancy Hooff into a study designed to come alive post sunset. “Sometimes the best solution to a room is deciding what time of day the room is most used,” which for this space is nighttime, when conversation and cocktails are often at their best. Going for “dark and moody with hints of cream and sparkle,” the designers conceived a color palette of rich caramel, copper, gold and black with cream and metallic accents, including a shimmering gold painting and a pair of gilt cabinets. The wood-grain wallpaper that envelops the room adds an additional layer of warmth while also making the room’s 12-foot ceiling feel less lofty. The artful array of furnishings, which represents a range of styles and periods, further enhances the room’s comfortable, sophisticated personality. —Jennifer Boles

Regency Redux
Foyer, Left Hallway & Ground Floor Powder Room, Liza Bryan, Liza Bryan Interiors
Adjacent spaces positioned at the front of the house, the entry foyer, left hallway and powder room are connected not just by location, but by the English Regency style too, which Bryan admires as “the culmination of sophisticated classical trends that were current for more than a century.” Visitors to the house are greeted in the foyer by a 19th-century Italian walnut circular table, whose graceful lines are repeated in a set of four midcentury steel-and-brass stools with hoof feet—similar to those often found on Regency-style furniture. The left hallway also pays homage to the style with its chinoiserie wallpaper, whose silvery tones help to lighten the windowless space, as do the myriad of reflective finishes, including the brass console table and the 18th-century Neoclassical giltwood mirror. As for the “classic but not stuffy” powder room, as Bryan describes it, stained paneling, white walls, black-and-white tile floor and an antique peat bucket used to hold newspapers give this small space a quintessentially English feel. —Jennifer Boles

Dining Room, Susan Bozeman, Susan B. Bozeman Designs, Inc.
A well-tuned mix of contrasting colors, textures and styles, the dining room is just as classic as it is current, making it an appropriate venue for any age, taste or occasion. To create a sense of intimacy in the architecturally airy space, designer Susan Bozeman covered walls in dark brown textured wallpaper, whose saturated color provides a strikingly modern backdrop for a collection of 19th-century cream-and-gold French porcelains. Contemporary pieces, such as the custom dining table and the branchlike chandelier, blend harmoniously with more traditional furnishings, including a pair of antique gilt console tables flanking the fireplace and a set of vintage scroll-back chairs. An antique woven rug features autumnal hues that “bring light and life to the room.” Although Bozeman admits to admiring each of the room’s pieces individually, “I love the way they all work together.” —Jennifer Boles

In the Mix
Great Room, Brittany Cason Johnston, Brittany Cason Interior Design
As stylish as Babe Paley and Dorothy Draper, the two women who inspired this space, the great room is a mix of jewel-toned colors and snappy patterns that enliven a soothing, neutral backdrop. Describing her design approach as “blending the past and present by combining historical architectural details and antiques with modern flair,” designer Brittany Cason Johnston partnered contemporary furniture, such as the pair of barrel-back chairs and sleek velvet sofa that surround the fireplace, with a number of classic pieces, including an antique parquetry inlaid commode and an English rosewood center table. The luxurious tactile fabrics and rich bold colors provide a feast for the senses, while a selection of contemporary paintings are intended to “stimulate thoughtful conversation.” As seriously snazzy as the space is, a sense of light-heartedness is present throughout, most notably in the pair of John Dickinson-style footed occasional tables. —Jennifer Boles

Loggia & Pool Deck Cooking Pavilion, Suzanne Kasler with Ballard Designs
Treating the home’s outdoor living spaces with as much attention to detail as she would an interior room, Suzanne Kasler outfitted the loggia and pool deck cooking pavilion with a multitude of fully furnished areas for lounging and dining so that “everyone can enjoy the outdoor space as much as the indoor spaces.” A longtime fan of classic rattan furniture and the craftsmanship that goes into making it, Kasler used a range of woven pieces, including chairs, tables and even planters from her Southport collection for Ballard Designs, which was inspired by an antique rattan chaise she found at the Paris Flea Market. Cushion fabrics used throughout these spaces are mostly solid neutrals with just a hint of pattern, like the tonal plaid that appears on a throw and accent pillows. Pale-colored garden stools, lamps and an assemblage of faux antlers all contribute to the well-appointed atmosphere that defines these outdoor spaces. —Jennifer Boles

Kitchen & Dog Wash, Elizabeth Ferguson Design, Morgan Creek Cabinetry
Inspired by homes in upstate New York, particularly those built in the Gilded Age, Buffy Ferguson, who served as the showhouse’s interior specifications designer, set out to design a kitchen in which “the bones are strong and clean.” Those clean-lined bones include a dark plastered barrel ceiling, steel windows and sleek cabinetry that sports two different finishes. “We divided the kitchen into two parts—the darker material defining the working area and the warm walnut finish serving as the entertaining space,” explains Ryan DeCesaro of Morgan Creek Cabinetry. While most of the kitchen’s storage is hidden, one tall wall cabinet was left open as display for a collection of antiques, including an oil painting, silver platters and glassware. “I wanted to add a few ornate, romantic touches for an unexpected element,” says Ferguson. The canines of the house were not overlooked, having been given their very own outdoor space—located just off the kitchen—in which to be washed and groomed. —Jennifer Boles

Breakfast Room, Liz Williams, Liz Williams Interiors
Depicting green and white ginger jars on a light blue background, the cotton chintz drapery fabric inspired Liz Williams’ design for the breakfast room, an inviting space decorated with a lively mix of patterns and colors. “Using multiple patterns adds interest and texture,” says Williams. A patterned wool area rug in a complementary colorway anchors a long walnut trestle table surrounded by antique painted Venetian chairs accented with blue-and-white seats. In the window, a traditional settee with linen damask upholstery and patterned velvet throw pillows creates additional seating. Adding a modern touch, a two-tier white plaster chandelier with a floral motif subtly references the colorful painting over the buffet, where a pair of chartreuse ceramic lamps with blue ombre shades offer additional illumination. —Tate Gunnerson

Main Floor Guest Bedroom & Bathroom, Sande Beck, Sande Beck Design
A hidden oasis tucked away for privacy, the ground-floor guest suite was designed as a space for guests “to relax in a winter-white world, enveloped in a blanket of softness and warmth,” says designer Sande Beck. White fabrics, which Beck used for upholstery, curtains and bedding, create tranquil surroundings, while the room’s white walls help to bring the exterior views into sharp focus. For added warmth, Beck introduced organic materials, such as the natural-toned woven wallpaper used on the ceiling, whose textured surface is echoed in the natural fiber rug down below. To accent the serene space, Beck incorporated the various greens, another reference to the natural world, through pillows, a pair of bedside lamps and accessories. The adjacent bathroom is equally placid with its pale walls and surfaces, which are warmed up by gold-toned hardware and accessories. —Jennifer Boles

Primary Bedroom & Bathroom, Bradley Odom, Dixon Rye
Bradley Odom pushed the envelope for his design of the primary bedroom, painting the walls in a sienna hue—a dramatic setting for a heady mix of modern and antique furnishings, interesting objects and artwork. “The minute you round the corner, you’re sort of enveloped into this warm and moody space,” he says. “It becomes an exploration through this land of curiosities.” Far from an afterthought, the ceiling’s perimeter is stenciled with decorative patterns. And in the center of the room, a stunning 42-inch brass dome chandelier seems to float over a Belgian-linen covered sofa atop a graphic hand-knotted Afghan rug. “Lighting is like art in that it can be very showy,” he explains. An oversize rattan pendant likewise commands attention in the bathroom, where an upholstered ottoman atop a subtly patterned area rug softens the hard surfaces while creating a spot to enjoy the double-sided fireplace. “The space is masterfully mixed and expertly envisioned,” says Odom. “There’s so much to talk about.” —Tate Gunnerson

His-and-Her Closets, Marcel Olariu, Kingdom Woodworks
Taking his cues from the home’s Gatsby-era aesthetic, Marcel Olariu envisioned the primary bedroom’s dual closets as upscale his-and-her dressing rooms with posh seating areas that will encourage the inhabitants to linger. “They have a bit of glamour,” he says. Separated by a pass-through with a walnut countertop, the closets are outfitted with finely crafted custom cabinetry, “his” painted in a dark gray color with brass hardware, “her” space in a glossy white with polished-nickel pulls. Each is illuminated by matching metal chandeliers with brass accents. A burnt orange velvet banquette cushion inspired by the walls in the primary bedroom adds a pop of color to “his” closet, where leather, cowhide and walnut open shelving contribute to the masculine milieu. A teal velvet-covered chair atop a plush shag rug likewise enlivens “her” space, which includes a built-in dresser with antiqued mirror. “They are attractive and comfortable at the same time,” says Olariu, “inviting spaces where you want to hang out.” —Tate Gunnerson

Playful Patterns
Bedroom & Bathroom, Courtney Giles Decker, Courtney Giles Interiors
Channeling her inner child for the design of a spacious bedroom, Courtney Giles Decker selected a sophisticated green and pink color palette inspired by the paisley fabric used for the draperies and bolster pillows. “It’s an unusual color combination that you don’t see every day,” she says. A mix of patterns further enlivens the palette. A pair of canopies in a pink-and-white checked fabric, for example, frame rounded headboards covered in a predominantly green patterned fabric. “It’s a large space, and the canopies made it feel cozier and more welcoming,” explains Giles Decker. In between the beds, a tranquil floral painting hangs above a faux-bamboo desk illuminated by a pair of green glass lamps with pleated pink shades. The palette flows into the bathroom, where a white oval plaster mirror and white wicker accessories pop against the pink-and-white checked wallcovering. “It’s very pretty and sweet,” says Giles Decker. “Perfect for a young girl’s room.” —Tate Gunnerson

Office & Hall, Michele Gratch, Michele Gratch Interiors
Designed for a busy working mom, the upstairs office is a space intended not just for business, but for glamorous alone time too. Basing her design scheme around the fabric used for the room and adjoining hall’s drapery—a lively chinoiserie print colored in shades of blue, green and purple—Gratch chose to paper the room’s walls in a textured lavender wallpaper. “I wanted the room to feel feminine and soft, and lavender is the perfect color for that,” she says. Because the designer thought the office also needed to be energizing, she grounded the space in a vibrant vintage Oushak rug, whose boldness is matched by a stylish pair of gilded Swedish Empire-style armchairs covered in a snappy leopard-print fabric. In fact, metallic tones make appearances throughout the space, including an antique Louis Philippe gilt mirror, a contemporary brass chandelier and a gold faux-bamboo console that has been pressed into service as a high-style desk. —Jennifer Boles

Whimsical Delight
Bedroom & Bathroom, Kristin Kong, K Kong Designs
A modern floral wallcovering establishes the lively color palette in Kristin Kong’s eclectic bedroom, which she calls the “sugar plum suite.” “It’s colorful, but it still feels tranquil,” she says. Flanked by an antique Chinese chest and a floral-skirted side table, a custom wingback bed upholstered in three distinct shades of pink plays off the vibrant pattern. “It’s a bit retro,” explains Kong. “I’m a big believer that what you love transcends a particular style.” The mix also defines the seating area, where ultramodern brass dome floor lamps illuminate a white bench and a pair of lounge chairs with tribal-patterned seatbacks around an antique table. Describing it as a palate cleanser, the designer leaned into the black and white color scheme in the bathroom, introducing a composite wood and glass mirror, black vases and a gallery wall unique for its many small frames. “The different layers of interest give people an opportunity to be drawn to different aspects of the room,” she says. “That makes the space dynamic.” —Tate Gunnerson

Upstairs Lounge, Dina Varner, VPI Design
Taking her cue from the home’s architecture, designer Dina Varner transformed the upstairs lounge into two distinct spaces: A hallway whose window floods the space with light and an enticing sitting area in which to enjoy a glass of wine with friends, read a good book or view the great room down below. Enchanted by the space’s vaulted ceiling, Varner painted it blue like the sky while her furniture selection was inspired by the home’s exterior architecture. “The tradition of the stucco with the New Age all-black windows was our inspiration for the mix of the decades,” which includes a 1960s tortoise console positioned in the hallway, an Art Deco-style coffee table and an antique oak stool. Vivid colors are also a striking feature of the space, especially the vibrant pink fabric that covers a “little chair,” a signature custom-designed piece that Varner uses in most of her projects. —Jennifer Boles

Laundry Room & Hall, Valerie Garrett, Valerie Garrett Interiors
“There’s nothing under the sun more mundane than a laundry room,” says designer Valerie Garrett, who dubbed her design of the upstairs hallway and laundry room “Art, Champagne and Laundgerie.” “I wanted to flip the equation to create some elegance and fun.” Framed by cut velvet draperies, an antique sofa re-covered in pink velvet creates a spot to relax or converse in the light-filled hallway, where a geometric brass chandelier and a trio of mismatched accent tables add a modern sensibility. “The beauty is in the mix,” she says. In the laundry room, a wall treatment with an ombre effect creates a stunning backdrop for fashion illustrations and a pair of Venetian plaster abstract pieces. Illuminated by a brass lotus-shaped chandelier, an antique bleached wood table creates a spot to make art, play a board game or get some work done. “I want people to come in and linger,” says Garrett. “This is a place to connect.” —Tate Gunnerson

Natural Appeal
Left Stair Hall, Right Stair Hall & Butler’s Pantry, André Jordan Hilton, Jordan Hilton Interiors
Natural elements abound in André Jordan Hilton’s design of the home’s two stair halls. Evocative of a forested landscape, a graphic wallcovering enlivens the right stairway and adjacent butler’s pantry. An iron chair sculpted like a tree branch complements the wood table at the base of the stairs. “Natural elements bring serenity and tranquility to a space,” says Hilton. In the left stair hall, a cowhide rug anchors a modern chaise covered in orange velvet alongside a contemporary pedestal table and a rustic tree stump stool. “Modern elements give the space a little bit of youth and create balance,” he explains. A nod to his former client John Lewis’ love of art, the hall’s white walls create a crisp backdrop for numerous art pieces, including a painting of the legendary political figure himself. “I wanted to tell a story from one floor to the next,” he says, noting he’s never designed a stair hall before. “This project pushed me to think outside the box.” —Tate Gunnerson

Dramatic Effect
Mudroom & Powder Room, Bowdre Longo, Bowdre Longo Interiors
Intrigued by the dark color of the mudroom’s storage lockers, Bowdre Longo replicated it on the moldings and covered the walls with a complementary geometric grasscloth. While the designer is known for her use of color and traditional furnishings, “I took a more moody, modern approach,” she says. An antique runner lightens the stone floors, coordinating with the colorful throw pillows on an Asian table repurposed as a bench along the window. It faces a timeworn French buffet staged with pottery and a selenite lamp that softly illuminates a vibrant floral painting. “The artwork married the mudroom to the powder room,” says Longo. Indeed, the powder room’s boisterous large-scale floral print wallcovering creates a dynamic backdrop for a Lucite-framed mirror flanked by antique burnished brass sconces with alabaster shades and mixed-media pieces in antique frames. Aware that many people overlook utilitarian spaces, “I wanted to make a big impact,” she explains, “a moment of wow that makes people stop.” —Tate Gunnerson

Tied to Tradition
Mudroom & Laundry Room, Amy Underwood, Amy Underwood Interiors
Utilitarian spaces should not be overlooked when it comes to decor, especially ones that are used regularly, says Amy Underwood, who let that philosophy guide her design of the mudroom and adjacent laundry area. Traditional patterned rugs, for example, soften the stone floors in both spaces. And accented by jute trim around the moldings and doorways, a wallcovering with a bohemian pattern elevates the mudroom walls. Green paisley-patterned draperies add a pleasing pop of color while allowing the laundry area to be closed off entirely. “The fabric adds dimension and makes the space feel more inviting,” says Underwood. The lively drapery fabric coordinates with the floral-patterned roman shade in the laundry room, where woven baskets, concrete bowls and other natural accessories warmly contrast the sleek white cabinetry and new appliances. “I wanted whoever the owner is to enjoy being there,” she explains. “It’s important to make sure the spaces you use the most are comfortable, pretty and happy.” —Tate Gunnerson

Media Room, Devin Taylor, Devin Taylor Designs
The sort of big-budget superhero blockbusters that have come to define modern-day cinema take center stage in the atmospheric media room by designer Devin Taylor. “It was fun to flex my creative muscles and create a space that people might not expect,” she says. Paintings depicting Marvel and DC’s cinematic universes flank a bright red U.K. telephone booth staged with a trench coat, necktie and black glasses—a reference to Superman’s alter ego. And Thor’s hammer is one of several superhero accoutrements hanging above a sweets bar. Not to mention the Batman and Robin costumes on either side of the screen. Upscale furnishings, such as plush leather theater seats and a pair of leather cubes in front of a marble-topped cocktail table, take the space in a more luxurious direction. “The whole room doesn’t need to say bam and pow,” explains Taylor. “It’s a sophisticated space with a dark, cozy vibe.” —Tate Gunnerson

Design, Build & Landscape, Logan Design Group, Joe A. Gayle & Associates
Situated on a partially wooded 2-acre lot in Buckhead and designed in the English Regency style, the 2021 Home for the Holidays showhouse, designed and built by Dietrich T. Logan of Logan Design Group, offers an easy lifestyle in a well-appointed environment. “Our goal was to design a structure that would engage and complement this particular corner lot,” says Logan. Striking with its two-story limestone entry and symmetrical design, the home’s exterior also features antique brick, steel windows and a pair of eyebrow dormers. On the ground floor, rooms flow seamlessly from one to the other, fostering an openness that feels welcoming. At one end of the house, the owners’ suite—made up of a spacious bedroom and bath connected by a two-sided fireplace plus his-and-hers closets—offers privacy, while at the other end, a guest suite does likewise. Accessible from both suites and featuring landscaping by Joe A. Gayle & Associates, the backyard is built for entertaining with a T-shaped swimming pool, cabana and outdoor kitchen, altogether making it a home one will never want to leave. —Jennifer Boles
