Lake Life Loading: This Lake Burton home Will Give you Vacation Envy

With covetable views and endless communal spaces, a Lake Burton vacation home by Tim Adams and Jamie Kirkman is poised for summer fun and entertaining for all ages

With a rare, covetable point lot on Lake Burton, architect Tim Adams captured dreamy lake views from every angle possible when designing this vacation home for a Sandy Springs family. “You have water on three of the four sides,” says Adams, who worked in tandem with interior designer Jamie Kirkman, builder Sam Jenkins, and landscape architect Jonathan Bussell. “It’s not often that you have a lot with this much water frontage, so we immediately embraced that and created a footprint that wraps that whole point.”

The entryway’s transparent steel doorway deliberately parades those scenes, immediately pulling you into the blissful lake life. Moving through the house, natural wood beams and stone accents echo the home’s exterior, and expansive steel windows and doorways continue to break down the barrier between the inside and the outside. Grand spaces with towering ceilings and unique architectural accents complement the surrounding scenery. “Something that’s special about this house is that we didn’t do a second floor,” says Adams. “That gave us the freedom to be creative with different ceiling heights for visual interest and allowed us to have the great room vaulted, which enhances the view down the lake.”

Kirkman catered spaces to the couple’s love of entertaining and to the active lifestyle of their three teenage boys. “The goal was to design a home that gave everyone their own space,” says Kirkman, “and to create a laid-back ambience that puts everyone at ease.” She intently designed the boys’ bedrooms to match their own personal style—each fitted with two queen beds for sleepovers—and fashioned inviting communal spaces, like the handsome rec room with game tables and a bar where both adults and kids can coexist. “The house has everything, from a golf simulator room to multiple bars. There’s no wasted space,” she adds.

Focused on tranquility, Kirkman kept the home’s color palette quiet with splashes of blue that call to the water, and tightly curated the furniture placement so as not to compete with the views. Special attention was paid to easy entertaining, from a screened porch with a sitting and dining area, to a dual-sided bar with indoor and outdoor access and a tucked-away scullery that serves as a working kitchen. “You can prep everything back there and keep your kitchen pristine,” says Kirkman.

It’s a house where all ages can experience their version of lake life. “This is a legacy house for their family,” says Adams. “The idea is that one day, the kids will come back with their own families.”
