Once Belonging to Golf Legend Bobby Jones, a No-Budget Renovation of the Historic 1929 Manse Marks the Start of a New Legacy

The 2024 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse spotlighted a storied history, exciting new design trends, and all kinds of architectural bells and whistles

Historic Hideaway

Foyer, Study, and Speakeasy
Tish Mills Kirk, Tish Mills Interiors

When Tish Mills Kirk took on the role of design chair and interior specifications designer for this home, she particularly treasured the opportunity to breathe new life into its most historic spots. She lovingly redesigned the study where Bobby Jones drafted plans for the Augusta National golf course, creating a country club-chic vibe with the addition of a coffered ceiling, an antique table, a cozy mohair sofa, and a piece of her own history: Trophies won by her late father adorn the bookshelves. The objective for the whole project was to “honor the history and create design-forward spaces that are inspiring for the way people live today,” she says. To reimagine the double-height foyer, which was originally a two-story porch, she chose oversize black and white marble floors, painted wood paneling, and hung dramatic art. The most jaw-dropping of her spaces, the speakeasy, is drenched in drama thanks to the lacquered custom teal-hued walls and ceiling, a custom tête-à-tête seating, a new bar setup complete with an integrated sink and concealed fridge, and an antiqued mirror that doubles as a work of art. “I think [Jones] would totally approve,” she says. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Living Room
Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon, Gordon Dunning

When Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon, the duo of designers behind Atlanta-based firm Gordon Dunning, were asked to design a room in Bobby Jones’ historic home, they felt it was serendipity. “We love Atlanta and its history, so being involved in this home is extra special,” says Gordon. “Home, story, and history are what drive us.” The pair was inspired by the morning room at the nearby Swan House on the grounds of the Atlanta History Center, which was created by society maven Emily Inman and acclaimed designer Ruby Ross. “We wanted to emulate that feminine, chic, and quietly gutsy feel of the room,” says Dunning. To create a cozy, liveable atmosphere, they created distinct vignettes—including one around a chartreuse settee and another around a dramatic blue mohair sofa—that feel cohesive in one room. Statement-making original art by painter Dawne Raulet and whimsical photography by Nick Mele is displayed alongside supporting pieces, including repurposed sketches from Atlanta-based architecture firm Historical Concepts, and a host of other artists for a collected effect. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Grande Dame

Dining Room
Don Easterling and Nina Long, Mathews Design Group

For design partners Nina Long and Don Easterling of Mathews Design Group, the concept for this stunning dining room started with the Schumacher Les Oiseaux wallpaper, designed by Mary McDonald. “It was inspired by an antique screen and has a delicate hand-painted aesthetic, which creates the most enchanting mood,” says Long. Serendipitously, Easterling was able to visit the space several years ago, and the pair knew that honoring the home’s history, while making it current, was essential. “The dining room was very glamorous and formal, so we wanted to bring that element back and play off the idea of a gorgeous and traditional space,” he says. The components came together in harmony, with a French antique-inspired formal table and chairs, traditional English sideboard and dramatic crystal chandelier. Eagle-eyed guests may notice a nod to Bobby Jones: The striped window coverings recall the awnings at the Masters in Augusta. The room begs to host all manner of gatherings from formal meals to low-key parties the whole family can enjoy, and that’s precisely what the designers had in mind. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Lasting Elegance

Kitchen, Scullery, and Breakfast Room
Mary Kathryn Timoney, Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio

These swoon-worthy spaces blend cutting-edge appliances and quartzite countertops with classic details, such as walnut stain, brass elements, and cabinetry in both black and white. Matte black cabinets with big, industrial knobs add to the grand statement, while exciting introductions—the black Wolf range and the range hood with metal banding by Matthew Quinn and François & Co.—make their first-ever debut. “You can really get away with something dramatic in those classic colors,” says designer Mary Kathryn Timoney. Fluted details on the gunmetal gray hood and brass hardware connect to the ribbed fittings in the nearby primary shower. “This repetition is trying to bring everything together and make the house more of an overall composition,” says Timoney. The pendants and white-and-black backsplash amplify the contemporary twist. The island countertops boast tech features such as wireless charging, while metal and leather stools connect to the range and hood. Draperies repeat the gunmetal hue and soften the space, with a curved settee offering more seating. Centered with the hood and range, the walnut doors reveal a surprise scullery with honed granite countertops and cabinets in a smoky green. —Lori Johnston

Sophisticated Retreat

Family Room Robert Brown, Robert Brown Interior Design

For Atlanta-based designer Robert Brown, of his eponymous interiors firm and beloved Townhouse showroom, his most successful rooms are the ones that he designs for himself. “Rooms that I want to live in and enjoy,” he clarifies. The design savant started with a custom suede wallcovering formed over a spongy substrate designed to absorb sound. “What I wanted most was the acoustical qualities,” says Brown. “It wonderfully absorbs sound and feels very luxurious.” The color, which reminds him of a cappuccino, changes throughout the day as natural light from the expansive windows shifts. A cozy sofa, pair of shagreen chairs, abstract wall art and sculptures, and a host of books are arranged around a stately fireplace, making it easy to imagine curling up with a novel, inviting guests for a predinner cocktail, or retiring for a last glass of champagne at the end of a celebration. “Several people said that they knew right away that it was my space,” he says. “I like elegant, sophisticated spaces that aren’t too stuffy, formal, or over designed.” —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Dream-like Drama

Primary Bedroom
Whitney Ray,Wyeth Ray Interiors

Walking into the primary bedroom feels like stepping into a tapestry, which is exactly what designer Whitney Ray hoped to accomplish. “We enveloped our space in draped fabric to create a cocoon and bring a sense of history to it,” she says. The fabric, a new-to-market Scots Pine fabric by Holland & Sherry, was at the forefront of every decision for the room. Dark wood furniture against regal details—such as a stone fireplace—gives nods to the castles of Europe. A brass inlaid rug and geometric pillows offer contemporary elements. Serving as a refuge for the homeowners, the primary bedroom holds a precious and robust collection of fine art from local galleries including Holland Macrae, Foxglove Antiques & Galleries, R Hughes, and Huff Harrington. Primary Bath
Renaissance Tile & Bath

The primary bath presents a serene space reminiscent of a luxurious spa. When interior specifications designer Tish Mills Kirk describes the showhouse project’s beginnings, she tells the tale of the owner at the time wanting to be wowed, which started, Mills Kirk asserts, with the project’s primary bath design. A custom black tub is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the garden and transform from clear to opaque for privacy with the touch of a button. In the shower, the fabricators used water jets to meticulously cut and piece together five slabs to resemble just one. “The team at A Touch of Stone, Inc. hand-carved details into the slabs that took 150 hours each to complete,” says Renaissance Tile & Bath showroom representative Robert White. “It’s the star of the room,” adds Mills Kirk. Another star of the space: The sauna, which is conveniently accessed through the shower. Walnut vanities and custom parquette flooring that was blown up in scale plays to the warmth and natural element of the space. The result is a relaxing and luxurious in-home spa. —Nicole Letts

Primary Closets
Kristin Wadsworth, Kristin Wadsworth Design

Inspired by a recent trip to Paris with her daughter, Kristin Wadsworth decorated a closet and sitting room to capture French elegance. Fabrics in romantic florals and vibrant pinks drape the windows and cover other soft goods. “The shades of pink flow well together, and it’s feminine without being in your face,” says Wadsworth. Cabinetry by Bell Cabinetry & Design emphasizes a shared but separate space. “The materials and finishes define the separation while still offering unification,” says cabinetry designer Beni Borza. “The materials differentiate the two zones—high-gloss paint for her and stained white oak finish for him.” The peninsula, which features a waterfall stone edge that cascades down the drawers, is treated as a boutique-style display case. Glass tops showcase the jewelry-lit drawers, and the floating shelves above were designed for display too. Cleverly, the tall mirror cabinets, in addition to generous interior storage, were designed for the exterior doors to open toward each other, creating

Purposeful Passageway

Lower Stair, Stair Hall, and Formal Powder Room
Angela Means and Danielle Carney, Means Carney Interiors

The welcoming stair hall brings the Augusta National’s beauty to Buckhead via 18 watercolor botanicals that depict the plant-based names of the famed course’s holes. Elena Ferguson’s artistic representation relates to the home’s story. “We love partnering with artists,” says designer Angela Means. It’s amazing how much art you can fit in a space.” The hall used to be the main entrance, with original details such as etched glass still on display. A new glass globe chandelier looks as if it could have been part of the original home, and to make the space feel more personal and well-loved, a bronze sculpture of Buddy the dog watches the comings and goings. A walnut chest and antique wall hooks offer stylish storage. “The whole space has its own moments in each area,” says designer Danielle Carney. “You can have a small space like a foyer, but you can still make it functional for your family, like introducing a game table.” The dark wood floors and railing imbue a rich masculine feel, which influenced the use of plaid with leather binding on the treads. In the formal powder room, they paired a dynamic wallcovering in a vertical stripe pattern with wood veneer and metallic foil next to the porcelain slab wall for shimmery elegance. —Lori Johnston

Southern Fashion

Junior Primary Bedroom and Bathroom
Sande Beck, Sande Beck Design

Rattan, cane, creamware, and antiques exemplify classic and Southern style in the junior primary bedroom and bathroom. Embroidered fabric on the pillows brings in shades of blue and introduces green into the inviting space, which channels Bobby and Mary Jones’ original bedroom. Sande Beck researched Mary’s background and sense of style, and designed with her in mind, asking throughout, “What would Mary want?” The peacock rattan chairs, 19th-century French wardrobe and antique Swedish nightstands, cane-back headboard, and Turkish oushak rug are timeless and traditional. The room’s wallcovering, a vertical stripe of ferns and sprigs, provides another layer in the bedroom with a bit of sparkle. The bathroom wallcovering reminded Beck of treillage and fit the old-school palette. “You can’t get more classic than blue and white,” says the designer, who also selected a light blue on the ceiling in another tie to tradition. Bedroom and Bathroom
Claudia Stimmel, Simplicity a Southern Lifestyle

Strategic layering was the name of the game when interior designer Claudia Stimmel, founder of Simplicity a Southern Lifestyle, set about designing this suite. Inspired by the home’s history and intent on blending both masculine and Southern influences, Stimmel chose a bold wallpaper in brown and green to give the bedroom instant depth. The sumptuous bed, its frame covered in channeled velvet and clad in luxurious linens and plush mohair pillows, is a centerpiece, while four pieces of botanical art tie the space together. An antique French deer head presides over the scene, a nod to the stately horns in Stimmel’s company logo. In the adjoining bathroom, green and white marble tile adds drama to the shower, while star-like knobs on the vanity and plates adorning the wall add extra visual interest. “My goal was to create a space that was both timeless and current,” says Stimmel. Mission accomplished. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Artful Escape

Laundry Room and Hall
Janie Anderson, Janie Harper Design

Designer Janie Anderson is a self-described lover of historic preservation. She set about designing a laundry room and upstairs hallway to make the presence of famed golfer Bobby Jones felt. Anderson, who herself learned to play golf at what was previously Jones’ home course, the Atlanta Athletic Club, found a mural by Shelby Hamilton of the 18th green of the ACC’s Highlands course. She used that oil triptych like wallpaper on the laundry’s central wall, its peach and green color palette informing the space. She added antique French lithographs to give a nod to the famed azaleas at Jones’ beloved course at Augusta National. In the hallway, she says, “The wide white walls and tall ceilings could only be treated as a gallery.” To fill out the space, she customized a skirted demilune table, added blush shades on linear chandeliers, and leaned on her friend Collie Holt, of Holt Art Advisory, to source more than 30 pieces of original art—ranging from watercolors to ink on paper to oils—to create an artful feel. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Feminine & Fresh

Ladies’ Lounge
Kelly Finley, Joy Street Design

On a mission to soften the historic home’s masculine image, designer Kelly Finley transformed the upstairs ladies’ lounge into what she has dubbed “the rosé refuge,” a distinctive departure from the men’s study on the main level. “Using pink undertones throughout, I wanted it to be a place to complete work, or to sit down with friends and be a space away,” she says. Finley positioned the warm burlwood desk facing the window to capture the best light for online video meetings. The angle allows it to double as a spot for serving hors d’oeuvres or chilling wine. Across from the desk, a custom raspberry-hued sofa draws shades of pink from the window coverings in an abstract print, which Finley chose for its feathery dimensionality. A curvy brass light fixture dotted with globes floats above the ultrafeminine and ethereal space, while an open bookcase holds well-curated knickknacks and easily accessible wine glasses. —Nicole Letts

Modern History

Bedroom and Bathroom
Karen Ferguson, Harrison Design with Universal Furniture

For her modern approach to a traditional bedroom, designer Karen Ferguson played with height and fabrics in the pieces from Universal Furniture. It all started with the upholstered bed, whose floating appearance intrigued the designer. Warm browns and apricot mixed with bright white—seen in the sheers with a trim in a whiskey hue, bedding, and light fixtures—create a soothing palette. The skirted velvet swivel chair introduces apricot and the upholstered wing chair features a linear stripe in a contrasting tone-on-tone white fabric. “We wanted to emulate relaxation and a cozy bedroom, even though it does have modern forms.” The chandelier and plush rug, which felt like the “perfect winter bedroom rug,” give the room a sophisticated cloud-like vibe, says Ferguson. She mixed tones and textures, such as gray nightstands, a cerused oak dresser, and a stone console that could be used as a desk, by finding commonality in proportion and details. A photograph of feathers adds a natural vibe to the bathroom. Underneath the vanity, the half-circular tile detailing is a subtle play on golf balls. —Lori Johnston

Playful Homage

Mudroom, Hall, and Informal Powder Room
Loren Taylor, Loren Taylor Interior Design

Loren Taylor leaned into restrained whimsy, envisioning a busy family with children in youth sports and a desire among homeowners to enjoy the present and retain the past. The designer embraced using interesting geometry and visual tension, notably the wood orb console, chrome sputnik sconces, and rectangular mirror with circular corner cutouts in the hall. Chrome is rooted in classicism, notes Taylor, and in looking at the past, she envisioned items such as the 1800s travel trunk capturing a family’s history. The play on metallics continues in the powder room with the hammered sink, sconces, and wallcovering offering a quiet luxury. “Even though it’s a family space, I still think that it’s wonderful to open a door and be surprised by a beautiful finish and texture.” Touches of Masters’ green are used in a light, bright way among peach, dark pink, and blue in the mudroom. The art and vintage dome light punctuate the space, where the tile influenced the charcoal gray walls. Says Taylor, “Sometimes a deep, enveloping color can help you decompress when you come in from a busy day.” —Lori Johnston

Glamorous Escape

Game Room Lizz McKay, Milieu

On the lower level, a sophisticated entertainment den beckons a game of pool. Here, Lizz McKay of Milieu is in her element, presenting a chic game room. The space’s centerpiece is the custom pool table topped with orange felt recalling a certain French fashion house. The table takes inspiration from popular styles of the early 1900s, reflecting the era of the home. Ingeniously, it was designed by Chris McKay and engineered in three pieces so it can be disassembled and transported as necessary. Against the far wall, a wet bar is dramatically completed with porcelain running the length of the countertop and backsplash. “It’s masculine, moody, and dare I say, macabre,” says Lizz. “I wanted to bring the storied history of the home in through the old architectural details.” Unexpectedly yet purposefully, there are no nods to golf in the room. Instead, McKay opted to develop a room that gave visitors a reason to step away from the woes of day jobs and links, disappearing into other distractions. Close your eyes and almost hear ice clinking in bourbon glasses or pool balls breaking. “If you look at the alcohol selections on the bar cart, they’re all digestifs: bourbons, whiskeys, and cordials. It’s designed to be escapist and a departure from the rest of the house,” she says. —Nicole Letts

What was once beside the home’s front drive has been reimagined to become a backyard getaway in the heart of Buckhead. The original pool house, now reimagined by Michelle Doughtie and Katelyn Reaves of Schilling & Co., exudes preppy personality and respite inspired by notable golf courses from around the world. Framed original artwork—a depiction of the iconic “Golden Bell” on hole 12 at Augusta National—hangs above the outdoor sofa. Shades of emerald are appropriately dotted throughout the outdoor space, most noticeably in the linear shower which almost harkens to golf cart paths. “We were inspired by the idea of the perfect post-golf spot to relax and grab a drink,” says Doughtie, who even playfully added the recipe for a classic golf cocktail, The Transfusion. Faithful Redesign

Design-Build
Firelight Homes, Kirk Design, Tish Mills Interiors, and Floralis

The transformation of Bobby Jones’ circa-1929 residence was a complete renovation intended to honor the history in a way that is design forward and cutting edge for today. The collaborators reimagined the classic Colonial home with a new grand entry and wing that expanded the residence to 7,800 square feet. The original palladian window was saved and moved into a prime position on the new entrance, which has a terrace and mahogany doors. Builder Firelight Homes executed intentional decisions, included matching the glazed texture and pattern of the brick, updating the slate roof, and adding copper. “We wanted it to look like it was always here,” says architectural designer Scott Kirk. “There’s some very cool surprises, but it also helps the way we live today.” The design team’s bold—and fun, adds interior specifications designer Tish Mills Kirk—decisions showcased different finishes and applications. The lot’s mature trees and privacy allowed Floralis to focus on creating a sweeping feel. “I love something that has age and grace. A historic home—there’s nothing better to me,” says landscape architect Lucinda Bray. Plush artificial turf extends from the front to a mini re-creation of Augusta National’s No. 12, which is viewable from the study. A new raised back terrace connects the renovated pool to the home, while boxwood hedges and holly trees offer privacy. “This project will always hold a piece of not only my heart, but all of ours,” says Mills Kirk. “It has a very special place.” —Lori Johnston
