Atlanta Area Farmers Markets
With spring officially only a few short weeks away, farmers markets are beginning to open for business! Here’s a guide to some local favorites:
OPENING MARCH 1…
>> In addition to fresh produce, Piedmont Park’s Green Market hosts suppliers of farm-fresh eggs, baked goods and artisanal sauces every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Learn to can and preserve your surplus Green Market produce with a hands-on canning class on March 15 at 11 a.m. Register here.
>> Formed by a small group of local farmers dedicated to organic production practices, Freedom Farmers Market makes it debut tomorrow. Look for names like Whipporwill Hollow Farm, Woodland Gardens and local favorites such as Star Provisions, Garnish & Gather and Cakes & Ale Bakery. The market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
OTHER FAVORITES…
>> The Peachtree Road Farmers Market at the Cathedral of St. Phillip opens April 5, inviting shoppers every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon to discover a bounty of fresh produce, prepared food and artisan crafts. On April 26, Linton Hopkins is stopping by at 10 a.m. for a special chef demo.
>> Chef demos begin mid-April at the year-round Morningside Farmers Market. Located across the street from Alon’s Bakery, this Saturday destination stocks an abundance of entirely organic local produce and flowers from 8 to 11 a.m.
>> Opening March 29, the Brookhaven Farmers Market features vendors utilizing sustainable agricultural methods. Vendors include Wastonia Farms, Darby Farms and Sweet Tea Factory. Located at Brookhaven Baptist Church, the marketplace is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
>> Decatur Farmers Market features both a Wednesday and Saturday market. The Wednesday market at 308 Clairmont Avenue is open from 4 to 7 p.m., while the the weekend market at 498 North McDonough Street is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both markets feature farm-fresh produce alongside meats, cheeses, breads and other savory baked goods.
