The mantel, limestone floors and plaster walls served as the impetus in the design of the elegant solarium. “I want rooms to feel captivating,” says designer Francie Hargrove. “The whole room should just make you want to linger.” A Susie Pryor peony painting captured her attention because of its texture, scale and palette, finding its home above the carved fireplace. In addition to peonies, Hargrove introduced mountain motifs, from embroidered fern draperies to pressed botanicals to antlers in her impeccably dressed space. The voluminous room allows geometric pieces, including the spheres that serve as the base for the glass-top coffee table, to remain in proportion with seating such as wing chairs and sofas in creamy tones. “There should never be one thing that makes a space,” she says.

The dining room’s dark green walls, coral accents and touches of gold and brass took their cues from the room’s tilework. Balance Design created a high-contrast space with massive elements like vertical panels painted by Steve McKenzie and an oversize gold chandelier. “We’re not afraid of bold and a little bit over the top,” says Stephanie Andrews, the firm’s founder. The serpent motif in the tile, which was designed by the homeowner, pushed the design toward Asian, with dragon ginger jars and chinoiserie napkins. Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green added to the intrigue as showhouse visitors questioned whether the walls were black, blue or green. The five-person team delivered a dining room experience with a focus on opposites, such as juxtaposing the antique table with modern chairs. “We love to collaborate, and so there’s more richness there than one note,” she says.

Designer Janie Wilburn honored the European château-style home and its setting by accentuating the existing paneling in her tailored master suite. “We were inspired by the house itself and its situation on the lake,” she says. Within the panels, she placed a scenic Cowtan & Tout grasscloth, Treasure Flower, depicting fish and lily pads in pale blue-green for a subtle yet sophisticated reference. A canopy of Cowtan & Tout silk carries the same luster and opalescence of the wallcovering, enveloping the bed in a smooth cocoon. So as not to compete with the pastoral view, a glass-and-metal light fixture designed by Robert A.M. Stern offered a modern interpretation of a gilt crystal chandelier. Pretty porcelains on Neolith mantel shelves pick up the shine of the marble floors, which continue into the bathroom. There, the freestanding sink with brass legs shares space with an antique vanity. “There was this beautiful harmony of modern and antique,” says Wilburn of the showhouse.

To play up the exquisite view, designer Yvonne McFadden started with a simple palette, pairing whites and blacks in varying shades throughout each intimate seating area. Having open-backed seating, tactile furniture and a collected feel to the accessories achieved a cohesive look. She embraced the color gifted by nature, using Perennials’ emerald green velvet fabric for the pillows. The patina and texture of the exterior, stone flooring and firepit were juxtaposed with clean-lined geometric pieces, such as Kolo Collection seashell chairs and custom coffee tables made of Neolith in the shape of interlocking puzzle pieces. A selection of wooden bowls and pottery serve as accessories, such as on a textured black suar wood coffee table with an insert square piece of limestone. “We were very fortunate to have all of these lovely spaces because it felt also nice to see these items carried and repeated over and over,” she says. “That’s why it felt so comfortable.”

The entryway’s statement piece was a gift from the architect in the form of a two-story oculus serving as the home’s central axis. Within the dramatic eye, Wyeth Ray Interiors installed a Paul Ferrante galaxy gold chandelier over a skirted table and round rug. Soft white walls and trim served as a backdrop for black and white contemporary art in the marbled foyer. To give guests room to step back and appreciate the art, designer Whitney Ray chose credenzas and consoles with surfaces just deep enough to hold a selection of small art, antique books, sculpture and other oddities. Flint linen draperies provide columns of softness. “Instead of having a dark line that divides antiques from contemporary art, we try to layer the two together,” she says.

Instead of mountains, which often come to mind with Cashiers, designer Jamie McPherson was guided by the serenity of the surrounding Lake Glenville. A dark blue Thibaut grasscloth, drawn from the reservoir’s colors, provided the depth for his moody men’s den. McPherson had long admired a collection of antique fish prints at Toby West Antiques and showcased the dozen framed pieces as an art installation. Enamored by its misty aesthetic and the contrast between light and dark, McPherson found the mood he was looking to evoke in a painting of Lake Glenville by Andrea Costa; a collection of French transferware in blue plays off of the palette. “I tend to like to work in a color palette of greens and blues and natural colors,” he says. “It was very indicative of my overall style.”

When the designers first saw the 19th-century chinoiserie commode in the south of France, “our hearts were pounding,” says Meg Harrington. “It was such a statement piece.” She and design partner Ann Huff built upon their desired Francophile aesthetic in the showhouse hallway with a mix of pieces from three centuries to fashion a space that encapsulates the joy of their shopping trips to Paris and Provence. Sassy brass chairs in a leopard print with a 1960s vibe flank a black commode, while a Louis Philippe mirror reflects a triple orchid. A 19th-century painted barometer provides “crusty glam.” A series of playful Raymond Debieve mixed media on paper from the ’60s and ’70s delivered “magic on the walls,” said the purveyors of artful living.

Designer Sara Brown brightened the breakfast area and kitchen to celebrate summer. “I wanted a fresh, whimsical and woodsy feel that would play off the surrounding landscape,” she says. Working with the existing cabinet color, she selected Neolith countertops and backsplash with warm gold veining and accessorized with large French-style pieces and brass bowls clearly arranged above the cabinets on opposite sides of the vent hood. She drew influences from nature for the feather pillow fabric, in shades of teal and blush, which is replicated with a hand-painted design on linen panels. Thanks to seating that includes a linen upholstered settee and brass and blush puffs, the breakfast space doubles as an area for conversations, cocktails and cards well into the day and evening.

Cashiers, North Carolina-based designer Lynn Monday refreshed the office and adjacent balcony. “I decided to go with bars and books,” she says. A green velvet Cowtan & Tout wallcovering (which showhouse visitors couldn’t resist reaching out and touching) played up the warmth in the office, while a neutral upholstery in the form of sofas and a pair of chairs balanced the hue of the cabinets, bar and built-in bookshelves. To lend a contemporary edge to the rather traditional room, Monday added pattern and color via pillows and art; this theme extends to the fireside balcony, outfitted with an aged metal bar, concrete coffee table and stone urns. In both spaces, Monday achieved a repetition of color, shape and styles. “I think of my room as art,” she says.

For the carriage house apartment, Bill Cook and Michael Faust of Vermilion Designs designed a getaway for the man of the house, “inspired by an English country gentleman’s retreat, typically utilized as a gathering place for post fox-hunting excursions,” Cook says. The duo layered rich colors and masculine touches to convey a cozy atmosphere, outfitting the space with antiques, oriental rugs, tapestry prints, leather materials and plaid prints. Oil landscape paintings nod to the foxhunt and “complete an atmosphere of the English country gentleman’s life.”

After designing a heavier, masculine room in the 2017 Cashiers Showhouse, Douglas Hilton transitioned to a feminine, lighter atmosphere for the guest bedroom of the 2018 residence. “I played good angel, instead of my bad angel,” he says with a laugh. His love for layering pattern and strong figurative art, however, remained. The Christian Lacroix wallpaper in the bathroom, for example, resembles views from the house. Keeping with his motto that “furniture is art,” the black hand-hammered poster bed forms a cube within a cube in stark contrast to the blue and white French paneled walls. Maintaining a flowy, airy feel was a factor in his choice of drawer-free bedside tables. The blue silk bedding draws out the swallows on the roman shades, adding to the ethereal ambiance.

When designer Sande Beck, a mom of four boys, learned her space previously was a boys’ hangout room, she went in the opposite direction to capture the feel of bridal suite or women’s dressing room. Pink was the obvious choice for the grasscloth ceiling and hummingbird fabric and wallcovering by Thibaut. A French Provincial dresser from Scott Antique Markets provides the foundation for a Louis Philippe gold mirror. “I kept it pretty and feminine by balancing antiques with more updated pieces,” she says. She then added textures with linens, velvets and metals, such as antiqued gold and silver, in the chairs and stools. Beck is quick to point out that the showhouse was a family affair involving her mom, husband and sons. “It was such a treat,” she says.

Designer Grayson Pratt transformed existing cabinets into a showcase for toile Thibaut wallpaper in pink by selecting various scenes for each panel. “I love when I have an idea and then I look at the final result and I just squeal, ‘This is even better than I thought it would be!’” she says. For her first showhouse experience, she accepted the challenge of making over the large, windowless space into a multifunctional room. She draped pink Duralee fabric between the laundry room and office rooms for a feminine air and painted the walls a soft pink. “In my head, I was picturing it to be a woman’s escape,” she says.

Designer Susan Currie envisioned guests arriving for a summer getaway and throwing open the balcony doors. “I wanted to make a space that was a cheerful guest room for someone to enjoy the mountain view,” she says. Inspired by Palm Beach Regency style, she draped the bed wall in pink and green. Thibaut’s Honshu print, a current take on chinoiserie, pops up again as the duvet. “I loved using bright colors and vintage furnishings, mixed white textiles and furniture to balance my use of bold colors,” she says.
