On Island Time
Nestled off the coast of South Carolina on historic Daufuskie Island, Haig Point provides a low-key Lowcountry getaway
Just a 30-minute ferry ride from the mainland, Haig Point is situated at the northern tip of the southernmost sea island in South Carolina. The lush surroundings, tight-knit community and tranquil sunsets make this Southern retreat feel like a home away from home.
Upon disembarking, guests will approach the Strachan Mansion, where they can unwind at the bar, take in the ocean views from a cozy perch or play billiards. From here, visitors may pick up golf carts or bicycles at the Concierge Office—there are no cars allowed on the island—and start exploring sites within the community, including the tabby ruins (remains of plantation dwellings) and the Haig Point Lighthouse, a historic landmark built in 1873 that’s currently used as a guesthouse and event venue.
Despite its private-island feel, the 1,100-acre community is well appointed with all the luxuries of an exclusive resort, including gourmet dining at the Calibogue Club, a scenic 20-hole Rees Jones Signature championship golf course—voted one of the world’s 100 greatest courses by Golf magazine—and a private beach club with a full-service, resort-style pool overlooking Calibogue Sound.
Other amenities include the Haig Point Fitness Center, complete with state-of-the-art equipment, an outdoor pool and group fitness classes; a private equestrian center, where guests and members can take lessons, board their horses and enjoy trail rides around the property; and the Haig Point Tennis Center, featuring six Har-Tru courts where guests can play under private instruction or as part of a league.
For those looking for adventure outside the community, a quick golf cart ride will take you to spots like historic Silver Dew Winery, Daufuskie Island Rum Company and the Iron Fish Gallery, which features works from award-winning metal sculptor Chase Allen. Guests can also enjoy activities like guided wildlife tours, crabbing, fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding—just be sure to make it back in time for happy hour overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway at the Calibogue Club.
With its accommodating staff, friendly residents and exceptional amenities, Haig Point will leave you with a true appreciation for Southern hospitality—and waterfront sunsets.
