A New Brookhaven Home Feels as Though it’s Always Been Part of the Neighborhood Thanks to a Star-Studded Atlanta Design Team
Tradition meets sophisticated simplicity in a Brookhaven home by a bevy of design greats
If you didn’t know better, it’s easy to assume this traditional beauty in Atlanta’s Brookhaven neighborhood has always been there—and that’s exactly the sense of place intended by residential designer Rodolfo Castro. Fronted by an elegantly manicured lawn, the newly built home easily blends in the historic neighborhood with its rich millwork and trim work, yet it feels current and clean with a brick front facade and siding seamlessly coated in white. “One of the best compliments I received was from someone who thought it was an old house,” says Castro. “The style is more traditional than what we usually do, but I loved polishing off my classical design skills.”
Castro worked closely with renowned interior designer Suzanne Kasler, builder Michael Ladisic, and landscape architect Alec Michaelides of Land Plus. Catering to empty nesters who often host their three daughters and their growing families, the team executed a home with open, flowing spaces for ease of living and a bevy of windows that offer abundant light and a connection to the outdoors. “They wanted a home that would live well for them and their family, but that they could also lock up and travel,” says Castro, who delivered everything from extra bedrooms for the grandchildren to a home theater.
Kasler, who’s worked with the clients on three homes, tailored interiors around their request for an uncluttered, yet sophisticated aesthetic. “They desired a foundation of tradition, but also a fresh, younger house with a simplistic way of living,” says Kasler, who peppered the quiet-luxury home in elegant wallcoverings, bold tiles, and hand-selected artwork. “Because the house is so quiet, art ended up being a big accent piece.” While the overall palette is neutral, the designer reveals the interior’s inspiration was based upon the green and blue hues in a silk floral that she and the clients found during a shopping trip in Dallas. The timeless print is showcased in the living room’s draperies and chairs, and Kasler visually linked the nearby dining room by encasing its walls in a custom de Gournay wallpaper flaunting blue birds. “These clients are very sophisticated, and they really appreciate what you can bring with design,” says Kasler.
While the all-white kitchen, a collaboration with Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio, expresses chic details like brass accents and a custom metal-edge hood, the nearby bar stands out with its rich gray-green color and glass-enclosed wine cellar. “We’re putting more bars in homes these days, and they provide a wonderful opportunity to create an exquisite decorative moment in the home,” notes Kasler. “It’s functional because it’s near the kitchen, but it offers another place to socialize that’s not the kitchen counter.”
The primary bedroom is a peaceful respite, where Kasler kept the draperies quiet to emphasize the outdoor views and placed focus on the blue Katharina Chapuis painting that resides above the bed. Other high-design moments include a stunning tile mosaic of birds and flowers that frames the primary bathroom’s soaking tub, and in one of the guest bathrooms, tile—not wallpaper—uniquely borders the double vanity.
And with the ultimate collaborative team, the end result couldn’t have been dreamier. “They love how the home lives,” says Kasler. “It really shows if you have the right team from the beginning, who listens to a client’s vision, it will be successful.”
