Pool Lounge and Bar A space for relaxing and entertaining, the pool lounge and bar were designed to offer luxurious creature comforts yet blend in with their outdoor surroundings. Folding steel doors on both sides of the lounge provide unobstructed views and easy access to the adjoining pool while also allowing sunlight to stream in. Venetian plaster, used on both walls and the barrel ceiling, amplifies the light, as does the pale-colored upholstered furniture, whose carefree 1960s vibe encourages all manner of relaxation. Casual and sophisticated, the space also boasts an Art Deco-patterned marble floor, striking art and a fireplace, but its most unique feature is a bar located at one end of the space. Separated by a steel-and-glass wall yet accessible thanks to its folding windows, the bar allows guests to enjoy cocktails or even a light breakfast while admiring one more indoor nod to the great outdoors: a floor-to-ceiling mural of trees. —Jennifer Boles

The Great Outdoors

Lillian August, Lillian August For Hickory White

Pool and Rear Patio An L-shaped rear courtyard with pool, cabana and pool lounge with sliding glass doors allowed this residence to take full advantage of today’s desire for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining. Blurring the lines between indoor design and outdoor performance is a mission close to the heart of Lillian August of Lillian August Furnishings + Design, which she executed masterfully in collaboration with Sherrill Furniture in an awe-inspiring pebble covered courtyard, complete with outdoor-friendly upholstered furniture, and a pool cabana that boasts all the interior comforts of home. “I wanted to show the capabilities that function, form and design have between upholstery and case goods,” shared August about her outdoor collection with Hickory White, featuring such considered furniture designs—like the covered alfresco dining table in the I-can’t-believe-we’re-outside pool cabana—that they appear to be plucked from the interior. As a revered furniture designer, August continues to transform exterior gathering spaces like this one into true extensions of their interior counterparts. “By pairing luxe outdoor textiles with mixed, organic materials, I transformed the outdoor area into a tranquil oasis centered around luxurious lifestyle and comfort.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Taste For Tradition

Phoebe Howard, Mrs. Howard and Max & Co.

Dining Room Designed with avid entertaining in mind, the dining room is the essence of gracious hospitality, no matter the occasion. The room’s tone is set by its variegated grasscloth wallpaper, whose sophisticated shades of green are repeated throughout the space, including the verdigris-colored dining table and a set of framed botanicals, and whose abstract pattern lends the space a modern sensibility, one which is echoed in a midcentury French buffet. During the day, reflective accents, such as a pair of antique gilt wood consoles, a burnished mirror and a bronze and crystal chandelier, bring warmth to their verdant surroundings, but at night, they shimmer and glow, especially when the room is bathed in candlelight. Perhaps the most inviting feature of the room is a set of Mr. and Mrs. Howard for Sherill Furniture klismos-style dining chairs, whose designed-for-comfort shape encourages guests to linger at the dining table. —Jennifer Boles

Kitchen Crush

Natalia Makarova, Karpaty

Kitchen and Butler’s Pantry Natalia Makarova delighted in the architectural elements and the underused rust hue in the marble backsplash and countertops. “I think rust is so much fun,” she says. “Mother Nature did such an amazing job on that.” Makarova sought to preserve the light and openness from the arched window and soft gray tiles for the walls and barrel vault ceiling. “It almost felt like you were in a cloud, especially with reflections from the pool,” she says. The bold shapes, beginning with the custom iron screen delineating the butler’s pantry, are paired with hidden, quiet elements that reflect her linear, minimalistic aesthetic. Paneled appliances and a bifold pocket door convey clean functionality. The custom brass hardware and island design showcase subtle curves, and the Apparatus pendants appear as glowing bowls. Rusty caramel tones in the calacatta macchia vecchia veer from more pristine marbles, Makarova says, adding that the full-height backsplash pairs perfectly with the walnut veneer cabinetry. The same bookmatched cabinetry under the butler’s pantry window creates a seamless transition between rooms. A sliding system with reeded details imitates a paneled wall to elevate the views from the foyer. —Lori Johnston

Breakfast Nook and Pantry Recessed in a niche, the custom walnut table and banquette intentionally lay low to capture the interest at eye level in the breakfast nook. The banquette, inspired by Parisian bistros, is upholstered in a wool and alpaca blend from the Holly Hunt Great Plains collection. Designer Natalia Makarova says she purposely designed the table in what some may call an odd shape to serve as a contrast to the kitchen’s curves, and offset it from the banquette to provide a comfortable spot for reading or phone calls. For warmth and cohesiveness, she used the same walnut as the kitchen cabinetry for the dining table and side table. Sequoia poufs from Habachy Designs + Atelier, covered in cozy sheepskin, join wood cane chairs and counter stools in rust at the island. Foyer Chic and cosmopolitan, the foyer greets visitors with a sophisticated, French-accented welcome. Conceived for a stylish female Francophile, the space is polished, with its muted French oak flooring and pale walls allowing first-rate decorations to command attention. Antiques, including an Empire-style armchair, a pair of silvered candlesticks and architectural crown fragments, enliven the space alongside a pair of statuesque wooden pedestals. Built to dramatically display a pair of patinated copper urns, the grooved pedestals were designed to emulate the Art Deco flair of the surrounding architectural molding. A vibrant yellow cotton-and-silk curtain panel, which softens the transition between the foyer and the salon, is the one bright note in an otherwise quiet space. Inspired by a photo of a billowing yellow drop cloth hanging in an Indian mosque, the curtain is also evocative of French fashion, calling to mind a haute couture creation. —Jennifer Boles

Salon One of the larger rooms in the house, the salon takes its cue from its architectural shell. Venetian plaster walls and a grey marble fireplace inspired the salon’s neutral gray-and-white color palette, which is both coolly sophisticated and warmly inviting, while the room’s architectural simplicity gave Brown the freedom to introduce furniture in an array of captivating shapes and materials. A steel bench, acrylic objects and a round table with a base that resembles a piece of abstract sculpture are just some of the room’s many intriguing pieces, which altogether give the space a collected, refined character. Comfort is also in abundance thanks in part to the salon’s impressive size, which accommodates a multitude of upholstered pieces, including a 120-inch-long sofa. Add the room’s panoramic view of the pool to the already impressive mix, and the salon becomes an incomparable spot in which to relax or entertain. —Jennifer Boles

Crown Jewel

Whitney Ray, Wyeth Ray Interiors

Paneled Study With a striking photograph of a woman as its focal point, the study is a blend of design styles, materials and objects that pay tribute to this captivating portrait. Inspired by the woman’s modern yet timeless appearance, Ray selected both contemporary pieces with interesting shapes, including a sloped sofa and asymmetrical cocktail table, and more traditional furnishings, such as an antique gilt wood mirror. The room’s color palette was also chosen with the painting in mind. Champagne hues, brass tones and, most pronounced, dusty blues are evident throughout the space, particularly at the room’s corners, where moody blue wrap-around drapery both softens the paneled walls and creates a sense of intimacy within the space. The study’s crowning object, in more ways than one, is a shimmering crystal chandelier, which not only tops off the room but also appears to rest crownlike above the head of the photographed woman. —Jennifer Boles

Classic Manner

Jason Arnold, Jason Arnold Interiors

Primary Bedroom A tribute to designer Jason Arnold’s favorite city, Paris, the primary bedroom represents an urbane approach to bedroom design, one which is reminiscent of Parisian hotels. An olive green wool rug, which was the first piece chosen for the room, determined the space’s moody color palette, whose rich, saturated tones include blues with accents of black. Additionally, textured materials with a soft hand, such as the cadet-blue worsted wool draperies, envelop their surroundings in quiet luxury. The designer’s appreciation for Classical architecture prompted the room’s main attraction: a pedestal-style bed covered in black-and-white striped fabric, which was repeated for the bedding. Other nods to Classicism include a pair of black, Greek key-embellished klismos chairs, a pair of antique decorative columns and a plaster bust. Additional enduring designs, such as a wingback chair, demilune table, a small campaign chest and even a Noguchi paper lantern, further contribute to the room’s civilized manner. —Jennifer Boles

Primary Bath Sensational curves and skylights are hallmarks of the innovative primary bath that began with inspiration from an Italian rug, says designer Cydney Mitchell. “It has a play on the all-around feel of the [Art Deco] architecture,” she says. Source’s take on Art Deco design resulted in a stunning shower backsplash in light tones of honed bianco dolomiti, calacatta gold and grigio onyx. Skylights illuminate the artistic backsplash focal point, answer a lighting challenge in the one-window space and anchor designated his-and-hers showers. The bath presented a series of firsts for the designers, with a particular focus on attention to scale. Raising the sweeping shower on a platform makes it feel like its own special space, Mitchell says, yet it remains connected to elements such as the fluted tub designed by SOURCE and provided by MTI, which takes center stage against a glass wall. The archway and vanity mirrors echo the backsplash’s rounded design, and the same shower tile is used on the floor. Brass fixtures, banding around the mirrors and a circle motif add layers into the splendid bathroom. —Lori Johnston

His-and-Her Closets Function and light drove the design of the master suite’s distinct his-and-her closets by Cydney Mitchell and Brittany Stafford of Source. “Her” closet, accessed through the bathroom archway, is a peaceful respite resplendent in green, where lotus flowers float around and rise above an oval window. An Art Nouveau wall that Mitchell saw inspired the hand-painted floral wallpaper around the closet’s singular window. Fabric cabinetry panels and carpet, both in subtle shades of green, soften the space in lieu of draperies. The layout accommodates a custom desk and island, flanked by cabinetry with hardware from Italian company Jesse. In the “his” closet—accessed from the bedroom—the designers planned early on for LED strip lighting in the custom dark wood cabinets to keep the focal point on the clothes, while smoked mirrors accentuate the drama. —Lori Johnston

Natural Beauty

Kati Hardwick, B.D. Jeffries

Bedroom and Bathroom For Kati Hardwick of B.D. Jeffries, her awe-inspiring bedroom design started with a 19th-century Belgian daybed. “It was my first inspiration for the space. I loved the color and femininity of the carvings but also its masculine feel and chunky stature,” shares Hardwick, who knew this standout piece, which was originally a bench, belonged in front of a large window to curl up, read a page-turner and watch the day go by. Hardwick continued a nuanced neutral palette throughout the calm, cool and collected bedroom and bathroom, layering distinctive textures, natural woods plus soft and cozy textiles. “The room had so much natural light so I kept everything light, bright and airy, with a touch of whimsy,” says Hardwick. —Jeanne Lyons Davis

French Connection

Amy Newell, Charles Interiors

Bedroom and Bathroom After an inspiring trip to France, designer Amy Newell of Charles Interiors was captivated by the je ne sais quoi of the country, bringing its nuances and inherent charms to the bedroom and adjoining bathroom. “It’s an eclectic nod to the French Art Deco movement,” shares Newell, noting the antique furniture, distinctive rug and heirlooms throughout the storied space. The unique bed and its corresponding textiles transport houseguests to another time, evoking the feeling of travel with all the comforts of home. The past is weaved throughout the room, including in the skirt above the desk crafted with quilling, an artform that’s centuries old and adds to the space’s sense of history. To boot, each panel on the valence above the bed has a different scene, creating a beautiful, unique narrative that’s practically plucked from the storybooks. “The chaise, bed, bedding and overall bed treatment, along with the fabrics used, subtly reminds the houseguest of being somewhere different and cultured,” says Newell. “The feeling of inviting, comfortable travel surrounds them in this space.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Child’s Play

Chris Holt, Holt Interiors

Playroom and Laundry Room Bright, vibrant and unexpected touches are threaded throughout this reimagined playroom, masterfully designed by Chris Holt of Holt Interiors. He described the charming, multipurpose space as the antithesis of the basement. “It’s more of a sophisticated young adult hangout—the hub of the second floor that connects to the upstairs bedrooms—than a typical playroom overflowing with primary colored toys,” shares Holt. “That said, vivid pillows,
diverse art and casual seagrass matting keep the space feeling youthful.” In the adjacent laundry room, another hardworking yet commonly overlooked space, Holt selected a graphic black-and-white wallpaper with a cheeky nod to ink stains to bring some life to the otherwise utilitarian space. His last touch of whimsy? Practical pop art. “I stacked vibrant Tide detergent boxes for a Warhol-style pop of color that was both fun and functional,” says Holt. —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Pretty in Pink

Nellie Jane Ossi, J.M. Howard

Bedroom and Bathroom Since working for the lauded firm James Michael Howard, designer Nellie Jane Ossi has always revered its principal designer, Phoebe Howard, whom she also calls mom. So she went to the archives and channeled a pink bedroom her mother designed for her first showhouse. “It has become such an iconic room of hers that many still refer to and love (including myself!),” says Ossi, who designed a modern spin on that classic bedroom. The anchor of the space is a Jane Churchill fabric that Ossi has adored for years: “I said to myself, when I do my first showhouse, I will use this fabric!” She leaned into the Art Deco design of the fabric with scallop details on the drapery, which complements the eye-catching tile in a similar color in the adjoining bathroom. She searched high and low for the perfect chair to complement the feminine sensibility of the space, discovering a unique curved chaise that was a perfect addition to the room. The cherry on top: covering the chaise with faux fur. “It’s a perfect spot to relax, recline and embrace your inner Jean Harlow.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Bedroom and Bathroom When it comes to designing nurseries, a niche Michele Johnson has made a name for herself in, she likes to think outside the box. “I call this room ‘Grande Crèche,’ which is French for a nursery for your grands,” says Johnson about this sophisticated reimagining of a traditional nursery. The multilayered space, which includes a well-appointed closet complete with a graphic Louee Vega wallpaper, ballerina bar and—wait for it—a disco ball, possesses a chic, vibrant and youthful sensibility, sprinkled with elegant yet playful decor that’s coveted by both the young and young at heart. The Louee Vega bedroom wallcovering looks equal parts feminine and cool as it marries pastels and earth tones, while a streamlined sofa is the perfect spot to perch while watching children play. “I imagine a grandmother lounging here while wearing a fabulous gown and watching her littles play or color in an Andy Warhol coloring book.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Historical Grounding

Stephanie Abernathy and Ashley Malone, Studio Wellington

Rear Entry, Laundry, Office and Half Bath Studio Wellington’s Southeastern Designer Showhouse debut juxtaposes Art Deco with the modern age. Stephanie Abernathy and Ashley Malone sought to use materials that evoke the great designers with functional sophistication for today. “Our inspiration is genuinely derived from some true historical example,” says Abernathy. They thought of French designer Jean-Michel Frank upon seeing the zellige-inspired teal ceramic tile planned for the laundry walls and ceiling. Color-blocked cabinetry and a roman shade in Schumacher velvet play off the matte blue-greens. The shagreen wallcovering from Cowtan & Tout feels like an updated take on something Frank would have used, but in vinyl for the office area. Above the custom oak desk and lacquered Spanish Revival chair, a green mohair cornice punctuates with Gatsbyesque glam. In the bath, a cork wallcovering is elegant and durable. For the rear-entry gallery, acrylic frames and black chains connecting a magnolia triptych in charcoal by Emily Farish present a contemporary take on European salon style. Adds Malone: “We want our spaces to feel like they have existed and will continue to exist.” —Lori Johnston

Media Room After an unprecedented year of rethinking the way we use our homes, Bailey Ward wanted to give the beloved but often overlooked basement media room the elevated attention it deserved. “After seeing the space and the rounded niche, I kept coming back to images of The Orangery Building at Versailles, with its beautiful barrel vault ceiling and the thousands of green citrus trees housed within it,” says Ward. Inspired by those rich green hues in the iconic landmark, she incorporated the color into the rollback velvet sofa, with subtle curves that nod to architectural nuances of the space. Ward sprinkled hints of glamour in the cozy hangout, from the welcoming colors of the fabrics to the geometric design of the rug. “Since people are spending much more time at home, I was so inspired to create a more formal, but also fun and fresh take on your typical basement.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Basement Bar, Lounge and Game Room Designers Cydney Mitchell and Brittany Stafford envisioned a “very moody parlor” in their basement spaces. Dark Venetian plaster walls and stained oak cabinets, brass finishes, Andy Warhol portraits and graphic shapes in black and cream offer a transitional approach to the look of a polo room. The designers created various seating areas and spaces with views of the golf simulator, pool and shuffleboard tables from Venture Game Tables and a TV hidden behind the smoky bar mirror. The home’s main hue reenters via the verde green galaxy granite countertops and roman shades in artichoke. The round dining table with slim brass banding, a set of four shapely vintage chairs and the Circa Lighting fixtures further link to the architecture and Source’s interior specifications and selections throughout the house. Dressed for the Decades

Benecki/Cole, Source, Land Plus, William T. Baker

Design/Build/Landscape The design-build-landscape team collaborated on a purposeful, livable, soulful plan for Tuxedo at the Park. The new 8,000-square-foot residence, across from Chastain Park, enchants with its French Regency architecture and ode to Art Deco. “The curation of this house is just incredible in terms of the sense of style,” says developer Stan Benecki. Venetian plaster walls, French oak floors and intricate tile and ceiling details imbue exquisite craftsmanship with timeless appeal. The five-bedroom home, with five full baths, two powder rooms and a finished basement, further invites relaxation with a pool, pool lounge, courtyards and a rear porch. For instant privacy, Nellie Stevens Hollies line the rear of the pool, where confederate jasmine is espaliered on the wall. Compacted crushed stone lends a European feel to the courtyard, where ‘Winter King’ hawthorn trees will provide a canopy. Synthetic turf is used at the pool and a sunken side courtyard. “People want their outdoor spaces to feel and appear as beautiful and functional as their indoor spaces,” says Alec G. Michaelides with Land Plus. “That means the level of detail to create these outdoor spaces has been elevated even more.” —Lori Johnston
